I've finally got enough in my hobby fund to treat myself to a lovely new Wood Elf centerpiece model. I'm currently stuck between Orion, Sisters on Dragon or a Treeman ancient/Durthu. However before i buy any of them, we have no clue if any of them will be alive in the new story. We've been given rules for them sure, but i feel that is just to tide us over until a new model range comes out then they'll be squatted.

So has anyone continued to buy ''dead'' characters just out of hope they can be played?

And on a separate note, has anyone had any experiences with Orion or the Sisters of Twilight? They are old metal models so i'm wondering how well they fit together.

Just buy whatever you like. Paint it up to the best of your abilities, especially if it is to be one of your centerpiece models. Enjoy it thoroughly.

Then, when a game comes up, use it, or not. If it gets dropped from GW support in a new army list, use it to proxy something that is there. Or find games of 8th, 6th, 3rd or even 1st edition Warhammer, or just use KoW or any other game system if there is rules support for your model there. Besides that, you indicate there are current rules for those models, so just keep on using those.

Point is, I don't feel restricted to the current state of fluff or rules. I see something I like, and I have the funds for it, then I buy it and enjoy it. In friendly games using a system that doesn't support a specific character, what keeps you from trying to come up with appropriate statistics with your friends, and playtest it extensively? All the more games for you.

As for your separate note, I can't help you there, sorry. But assuming a bit of hobby experience on your part, there should be nothing you can't handle with an appripriate little bit of pinning, or green stuffing, if there are any problems at all. A lot of the other metal models could use a very small amount of green stuff near and on the big seams, though.

I agree with the above.

There is absolutely no reason why you have to follow the fluff. Make an army you enjoy with the models you like.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

buy what you like, in AoS you can always use it as a count as... most units are like that, heck I might but that green dragon with the two wood aelfs on top and just use it as a normal dragon with lord or something... as long as it is distinct enough from the other players etc... I got myself an engineer dwarf special character and will simply use him as a dwarf engineer...

Note quite the same thing. Historic battles will always be a thing, because unlike the Fantasy Universe the characters inhabited, History is much harder to retcon.

I think i'll grab Orion, because either he gets retconned or not, people will still want to play 8th so i could always pull him out for the odd game.

I've been told by my local GW that even though overtime some models will be phased out of production they will always keep the rules up for them. So later on down the line if they do scrap Orion production wise you will still be able to use all of his rules in game.

Ultramarine army- 10k
Imperial knights- 2
Vampire counts- 2k
Eternity King- 3k
Dark Eldar: Eternal Thorn 1300pts
And lots of other armies, I just cant fit them here

Say the GW does phase models out, they have already provided us with free warscrolls which we can use forever. The only issue will be if they change the core rules, which I'm guessing they may do in future as a kind of F U to gamers who won't buy into the new product line.

I'm officially out on whether the GW will update the rules. It sounds like they could do with a re-write and clarification. But what then happens to all the people who spent a fortune on the boxed set with rulebook?

But Epic, Necromunda and so on are no longer supported officially, and they've still got free rules that have been updated...

Upcoming work for 2022:
* Calgar's Barmy Pandemic Special
* Battle Sisters story (untitled)
* T'au story: Full Metal Fury
* 20K: On Eagles' Wings
* 20K: Gods and Daemons

I would not buy any models right now. Look at the new models in AoS and you can see why.

They are bigger. The most outstanding models from WFB will look small by comparison with the new lines that are being released. Eventually, that stunner you are painting up is going to look very out of place and not stand out as a centerpiece.

I have a box of Space Orks from 2nd edition. They are about 2/3rds the size of a standard Ork boy and are disallowed in tournaments like the BAO due to concerns about advantages.
