There are some people thinking that the cracked crystal came from Vader's light saber, which sounds plausible enough.

Which could explain why Kylo Ren would want an undamaged crystal used by Vader, and maybe setup more story down the line.

Maybe he cracked Vader's sabre crystal when he was assembling his own sabre? Vader was already Jedi Knight/Master level when he built his, right? So it stands to reason that an apprentice level guy might bugger it up..

Did Vader's hand and sabre go down the abyss thing, or did it fall on the floor when Luke cut it off? I don't think we saw where it went...

I don't think the film ever actually showed what happened to it. I might rewatch it this weekend to see if I notice anything.

If he chopped it off and it didn't go down the shaft I wouldn't be surprised if Luke picked it up as he helped Vader and burned it with him (maybe why it cracked?).

The wiki says it fell down his shaft. The wiki also says that all new Light sabres must be made using synthetic crystals, because the Emperor banned the use and sale of natural crystals and made efforts to destroy or seal away all the sources of those crystals (caves). Perhaps Kylo Ren had to cobble together his own light sabre using incomplete instructions like Luke did, and damaged his synthetic crystal in the process, or there were flaws in the creation of the synthetic crystal itself.

EDIT:
Kylo Ren's lightsaber used a cracked kyber crystal, which generated more power. The excess power was vented out the sides, thus creating the crossbar design he is known for.

Its a natural crystal, not synthetic.

I think that's part of the Legends Canon (the crystal part, not the shaft). Starkiller Base was powered by Kyber crystals I think.

I personally don't trust Wikis as any silly bugger can edit them, so what you're reading may be a load of tripe half the time lol.

Which is why you always read the citations

Honestly, even in 'real' life, wikis are great and, in my opinion, just get a bad rep because, as with any other potential research tool, people use them incorrectly.

IIRC, in the EU the Emperor simply blockaded the main source of Kyber crystals(Illum). He didn't destroy the planet, only any and all records of it.

So the crystals could still be obtained, but knowledge of their location would be difficult to find.

Just a note, Ren is 30 years old (the actor is 31). Rey is teenager at 19 (actress is 23).

The speculation is that something happened when Ren was 14- the same age that his grandfather built his first saber and became a padawan.

It's one reason Rey directly defeating Ren is a terrible pacing choice- there's nowhere to go that builds tension between the two. Rey has already demonstrated her natural abilities put her firmly ahead of Ren, in terms of force powers (mental probing and telekinesis) and in terms of saber skills. Both are now set for some training, but where Ren is just completing his, Rey is only just beginning. He's got a small amount left to go while she's got everything. She will improve far more than he will simply because she has more to improve.

The bad guys are supposed to be threats to the heroes. Right now the bad guy is playing catch up.

Everyone keeps just glancing over the fact that Ren was literally shot by a bowcaster five minutes before that fight. Throughout the entire movie they keep hinting at how powerful Chewie's crossbow is, including the shot in Starkiller Base when it sends a trooper flying across the hallway and the scene where it blows up two troopers at once outside Maz's place. Ren took a direct shot to the stomach. And then, Finn lands a solid light-saber hit on Ren's light-saber arm.

What was odd is Han did know how powerful Chewys weapon was, they have been together for 40+ years

He may have known how powerful it was, but he may have just never shot it.

I know that there there are a lot of handguns that pack a lot of heat, but I may never really appreciate them until I actually fire one of myself. I know "real life" logic doesn't always translate into movie logic, but maybe it's something like that?

Keep in mind, though, that this is Star Wars we're talking about, with a legion of fans ready to quote even the most minute bit of trivia. If there was anything incorrect on a Star Wars wiki, there would already be a hundred fans ready to correct it in seconds.

Nope, they've always been red.

Which games?

I know bowcaster bolts in Star Wars Battlefront are red but it's been ages since I've played any other Star Wars game that had a bowcaster in it.

Most of the computer games up until the new Battlefront have had them green, I believe.

Most certainly the whole Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series. Probably Battlefront II as well.

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd guess that the only reason it was 'correct' in the new Battlefront is because of the need for it to tie in with merchandising in the new film.

Yeah, it was definitely green in Battlefront II, which is odd because the correct color has always been red, at least as far back as 1980.

Wikipedia does say they were green in "Revenge of the Sith." Can't say I remember that, but hey... It's not like I rewatch that one too often.

Part of it I guess is just, since Bowcasters tend to be a 'special' weapon in games, they tend to want to give them a more unique appearance when shooting.

Meh... it's the prequels.

In the movies that matter, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, it was red!

Bowcasters aren't lasers; they fire a solid metal projectile encased in plasma.

He had a different bowcaster in RotS.

Comparing pics from EpIV and EpVII, it may be a different gun in the new one, too. It's at least modified... The bow part looks wider.
