I'm about to paint up some Inifnity Yu Jing and I'd like the harder armour plates to have a terracotta look.
Has onyone ever tried this look, and do you have any advice (either specific paints, or approaches such as "highlight with yellow/bone, no white")?
This kind of colour:
I am also going to just have a stab at matching the colour(s) with my own mixes, but historically that's not gone well.

You probably might want to start with a small amount of brown relative to the orange, so on your wet palette add a brush of orange, clean your brush then a small amount of brown at a time till you get the colour you want.
I find that the pigments in an orange can get drowned out easily by the brown.

Citadel used to make a Terracota color, it was one of the shades axed in the late '00s.
I think the easiest way to do it would be to paint with a rich orange shade, and then ink brown, so that only a bit of the orange comes through. Vallejo Model Colors Orange Brown 131 looks like it'd work.

Why would you show me that... I already have too many paints, and that system looks amazing...

I tried painting my Yu Jing remotes with more of a terracota scheme compared to a brighter orange used for heavy infantry/ armour.
That picture is a bit washed out but this one of my Su Jian gives a better idea of the base colour.
I think the original base colour for the remotes was just a random combination of leftover paints i had been using for other things at the time. But i tried to match it when i basecoated the Su Jian with Bestial Brown mixed with some orange craft paint i was using. For highlights on the Yaokong i added flesh tones to the mix as well as shading with washes (gryphonne sepia/ ogryn flesh).
I think using 'terracota' coloured paint as the base would give you somehting closer to the red stripes that i have used to break up the base colours a bit. I have since added more of these red panels to the Yaokong to give the panels a bit more variety. For the terracota/ red panels i also highlighted with flesh tones to tie in with the other panels.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
I actually have some Foundry Orange Shade (3A) which would be a good base colour to start from but the rest of the orange in that triad would be no good for highlighting the terracota colour.

What a great idea! If I was to ever start YuJing (tempting with the Invincible Army coming out sometime) I'd consider this.
Loads of suggestions already, you just have to experiment to find one you like!
Looking at the picture of the tiles I think a more textured ceramaic effect would be awesome. I'd have to try it out but maybe Riekland Fleshshade wash over white primer, and then stipple on some lighter and darker terracotta shades once it was dry using some packaging sponge. And then edge highlight... Damn, now I want to see if it'd work or just be a total mess
