Hey guys, we are gonna be building a new table soon. Below is a detailed plan and a sketch of it.

Now all measurements and pieces needed are shown in the sketch minus the 3 plywood pieces to go on top each frame.

To complete this project you will need the following cuts of wood:
4x - 38" 4x4
2x - 72" 2x4
5x - 45" 2x4
4x - 66" 2x4
4x - 38" 2x4
2x - 35" 2x4
1x - 48"x72" Plywood (4x6ft, 1/2" think, one side sanded)
2x - 38"x69" Plywood (1/2" think, one side sanded)

This would require the following wood to make those cuts:
3x - 4x8 ft 1/2" One side sanded Plywood
2x - 4x4x96
12x - 2x4x96

Optionally but not included in this plan you could make an outside trim to go around the top frame to stop the dice from rolling off. To do this you would use 1/4" deck boards, if you want the measurements for those let me know.

So there you have it, a bit more in depth then our last tables, but much better plans. Let me know what you think.

The problem is, difficulty moving this thing from one space to another. If you build this in your garage, it would be difficult to get it to your basement. If you could make the top detachable or at least separate in some way, that would help with both weight and size.

This thing would be impossible to move. But that is ok, it is made to stay where it is built.I already have some mobile tables. I want a sturdy, long lasting and effective table. That looks decent.

I would consider some sort of rim around the edge, to prevent minis from being knocked off and dice from rolling over the edge regularly...

Some things I considered and/or implemented in my table:

I considered the upper shelf that you have in the upper part under the board but ended up removing it as it actually became a waste of space (unless a drawer system was implemented). Also you should build a separate detachable rail around the edge which actually is easy enough if just rested on the outside bolts. For the legs I would use two 2x4s instead of 1 4x4 in this manner: "|_" (It makes the bottom shelf a little harder to fit but adds a bit more space). Make pilot holes before putting in the straight pins instead of screws or nails. (This makes it easier to dismantle and reassemble the entire table to move it while also adding support). Lastly, I would recommend making a support under the bottom shelf if you are planning on storing a decent amount of stuff on it. Mine was something like this: "--|-|-|--" right underneath the center.

Lookg good, but rather than making it exactly 6x4, why don't you add 6" dead space on either side for dice, dead models, cups, etc etc?

I have a table that I built that is very similar to your design, running around the top I have 2x6 instead of 2x4 so that I could have a lip and I mounted the 2x6 higher so I could turn it into a pocket table. I have a 6x4 double sided insert and a 2x4 double sided insert. one side of the large inserts is black for Star Wars, with the opposite side green for FoW, WHFB or 40k. The smaller insert has green on one side to expand the table to an 8x4 and the other side has floor tiles stuck to it to be used for model, book storage.

Hey guys thanks for the comments.

As for a side guard, I do have plans for it, it is just not included in the plans.

The first shelf is to store the table tops we have made out of foam/plywood, we have a couple of them that need proper storage. The second shelf is for empty army boxes which arn't too heavy.

Where the table is going there isn't really enough room for anything longer then 6ft, we will be buying mountable cup holders and trays for the long side of the table.

That amount of 2x4's is really overkill. You could build it out of 1x4 except for the corner posts and it would be plenty strong as well as able to be moved around without an elephant to help.

This is almost an exact replica of the game table I build (mine didn't have a center shelf, and I only used the bottom 2x4's as support, since I didn't need the shelf space.

It'll be a sturdy table, though not very pretty to look at.

As for those talking about how heavy it is? Bah! I was able to move mine by myself (one side at a time) to vacuum under it, or with my (then 14 year old) daughter's help!, by just lifting it straight up.

Here is what I used for the legs... seem to work well and if you can find them on sale, they can be cheaper than wood..
