Hello Dakka,

I wanted to add some SM scouts into my collection but I dont like the models, does anyone have some good ideas for some alternate and better looking models to use as SM scouts?

What don't you like about them? The heads are not great. Perhaps just a head swap?

without the cloaks and sniper rifles they look too much like space marines to me, Im fine with the full grown SM being a bit static looking, but Id like some more dynamic looking scout models without cutting/pinning the whole lot of them.

What about using astra militarium models with pig iron custom heads?

Lots of quite nice examples here (forgive the horrible link) -> https://www.google.com.au/search?q=pig+iron+heads+on+cadians&safe=off&biw=1920&bih=933&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0CBwQsARqFQoTCJDisJLZuMcCFcEqpgodBvoEvg#imgrc=yuZ-jp8E-P3SkM%3A

Have you considered going the "Legion" route?

All the alternatives I can think of are more heavily armoured than the GW scouts, and consequently similarly static.

reposing the GW ones would be cool, but like you say, a lot of work.

starting from a guard or similar model might work. but the effort of making them more look more astartes might be just as great.

Well... okay, to address a few things.

First, the scout kits are junk. They're the worst GW plastic space marine (including chapters) infantry kits that are sold. There are like... 2 standard standing poses of legs? Plus 1 crouching for the cloak, and the heavy weapons setups. All the upper torsos for the bolt gun/bolters are the same, and the quality of the plastic/cast is like... well, a decade old. Oh yeah, and the heads are ugly.

The only other space marine infantry kit that's as old is the Command Squad, and that's a much better kit. Plus, the unique pieces in it can be combined with generic, newer, cleaner pieces (like legs). On the other hand, the scouts don't have nice fittings for, well, much else.

Scouts are also the only infantry kit where none of the pieces are interchangeable (except between the two scout kits). The arms, for instance, use a different size shoulder.

But, this actually makes sense. Because they're not in power armor. So sadly, if you go the legion route (or the new FW marines with sniper rifles), as cool as they look, that's not what they're supposed to look like.

Sooo... what to do?

The upper torso (chest) is actually not terrible, and is the most distinctive piece of a scout. So that is usable. The Tempestus Scions have similar, but much nicer looking legs that would work with some conversion (you'd also have to get rid of the markings):

Note that the little flaps that go over the legs are part of the upper torso, not the lower one. The heads are actually not bad, too.

You also have the Elysians, from FW, that are a nice model and have conversion/kitbash potential:

In the end though, I said screw it. Why?

Well first off, scouts are not a low-model-count unit. I'm going to be building 40 standard, 10 camo, and some mix of heavy weapon guys. It would cost a fortune to combine them with elysians or scions.

But even if the cash register didn't stop me, I don't really love the arms that come with scouts. They are repetitive, dated, and fixed to a few angles. And, the Scout chest doesn't work really well with other arms. plus, there's literally ONE chest -- no variety. There's not really any way to substitute them, because the arms have to look like they're wearing half-power-armor (and have some decal space).

they do look very cool. they also look like they should have a 3+ armour save instead of a 4+ armour save, which may be a problem in some situations.

Yeah, this is really my issue with bulking up scouts. They should look like big humans, but not look like they are in power armor.

Using a standard upper torso also loses the back of the light armored chest, which is actually a nice feature of the model (and one that differentiates it).

I wasn't the biggest fan of the scout models until I realized two things (at least for me): I hate the provided Scout heads, and I hate the established paint scheme (chapter colors ≠ stealthy). So I did my scouts as so....

has anyone had luck taking the scouts off the landspeeder storm sprues and putting them on bases? It could get a little jenky, but looking at a few I have I can see some neat dynamic poses that the "limbs dont move that way" issues could be hgidden in basing terrain

Try Anvil's grill heads http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/Grill-Heads?search=grill
Spoiler:

I used them on my kataphron conversions and they are excellent casts. 10/10 would servitor again.
