Sorry! They are suing for property and emotional damage, inflicted by the State, as well as seeking the recovery of legal expenses for this fiasco “because the City of Arlington and Detective Perez showed a reckless and callous indifference,” according to Reason magazine.
While I'm against hippyism, I'm even more against evil totalitarianism. I hope they get their money AND I hope the US Congress go ahead and legalize pot. Not for any hippy reasons, just fiscal conservatism. Pot heads in jail is money that could be spent on schools and roads. Also, sin tax the gak out of it like you do for cigarettes.

Police seemingly take the easy way more and more often and execute raids/no-knocks rather than more old fashioned police work.

What makes me scratch my head is that bit in the article about their website's use of marijuana slang. I'm not justifying the cops' actions in any way, here, but what exactly were they thinking when they decided on branding their food business "Uber Dank"? Maybe I'm just getting tired of businesses thinking they're clever by using drug slang in their names or their product names.

He's got his sidearm, he's got the required AR15 with a red dot sight, a side-flip magnifier, a flashlight, a laser, an angled foregrip, his flip up sights, looks like a suppressor, a magpul for his magazine, but obviously, not a helmet on his head. Why isn't he wearing a kevlar helmet? Is it more important to wear the boonie hat, as to keep the sun out of his eyes while he makes that long patrol from the back of his Bearcat 20 yards across the property? There is so much wrong with policing in America these days, and man oh man, has this story got most of em covered. It's the assault pack that really got me. I don't see any way how having an assault pack for a SWAT raid (even a fully justified one) makes sense. If I was doing a raid on a building, and I didn't have to hike to it first, or hike back when I was finished, an assault pack would be quite literally the last piece of gear I would want.

As for the amount of gear, a lot of folks subscribe to the 'better to have and not need than need and not have" school of thought. If it is a short duration raid and you are used to training in full gear, it won't slow you down all that much. First thing I thought when I saw the picture of Captain Camo was "NERD!!".
I only ever found ways to reduce the amount of crap I had to wear. Only piece of gear I ever made sure I had on mission was my scarf....cuz it got really cold in the winter lol.
Everybody wants to be SF but they don't want to put the work in. I didn't and so didn't want to be one. That and every SF guy I ever saw was in minimal gear possible, to include brain buckets and eyepro lol.

My thrust was that this guy doesn't appear in any way whatsoever to be a law enforcement officer. This guy is fully kitted out for combat, and I was trying to emphasize the problem with that approach, beyond just the bunker mentality: I think there is a total unnecessary risk to these officers just because they don't look like police officers and they are operating in a state with a highly armed populace. I feel like it's begging for someone to shoot at them who might not have shot at what they recognized as police officers.
They do have to keep up with the militias, though.
Seriously, though, I wonder if this is a case of use the funding or lose it. If you put toys in front of the kids and tell them they have to play with them or there won't be anymore, that could explain this over the top nonsense.

No, but plenty of things could happen. The short raid on the Branch Davidian compound took how long? Even a simple hostage situation can extend hours to days.

No, no - when someone reads an article about a swat team raiding a location over a reported 2 ounces of marijuana (about $400 worth) and it turning out to be an organic tomato farm, while dressed up as Rambo, and their comment is "why shouldn't the police take their jobs seriously" - don't dignify that with a response. Just treat it like a stranger on the subway who pooped his pants and doesn't seem to have noticed it. You can't help him.

Sure, but the police weren't, like, pinned down behind enemy lines with only the equipment on their back and strapped on their bodies to sustain them. It's not a good analogy.

Even if they were pinned down, the would still have access to reinforcements. Besides, is tacticool gear really needed for a hostage situation?

The ATF actually tried to get a memorial statue of an agent leading two children by the hand built on the site. It caused a gak storm back in the 90's.

Modern face of quantitatives. Just like the guy with the radar gets measured on the number of tickets he gives out, the drug squad gets measured on the number of raids they execute they produce arrests and convictions. It means the system is actually set up to show very little patience for long investigations, especially ones where there's a chance that it might come to nothing.

No, it was a toasting marshmallows joke, and I think it's been pretty firmly established that time + tragedy = comedy.
