Do you think that tournaments should consider allowing units with Experimental Rules to be included in armies? I was getting excited about putting out my Chaos Knight and sent out a feeler to FW to see when the rules would become "Official", and this is the response I received:

Thanks for the email, essentially the "experimental rules" are official and are awaiting the correct publication to come round to be printed in a physical book.

For all intence and purpose these rules will be the one you see in the books, with regard to the Chaos titan I think they will be a while before these are seen in an Imperial Armour as it isn't long since we released IA 13 War machines of the lost and damned and also Siege of Vraks which would have held the rules for this particular model.

I'm not sure why your friends would dislike the experimental rules as these do state they are official till there is a hard copy in a book which again is likely to be the exact same as the experimental rules.

I hope this helps.

Now, I understand that up until this point, "Experimental Rules" basically has been interpreted to mean "not balance tested yet", but FW has made it clear up by this and most releases in recent memory that the rules don't change much between "pre-release/experimental" and the actual rules in IA books. Given that, is there a reason that people don't want to play with something just because it's not in an official book? I'm sure my Tau buddies would be quite happy to put down a Y'Vahra, or Chaos people to use Chaos Knights or the Kytan Daemon Engine.

Should this be something that we think about? I don't really think anything that's sitting in "Experimental" is close to broken compared to what's officially out right now, and I for one am pretty excited to try out some FW goodies.

I have no idea why some (or most) tournaments choose to single out experimental FW rules as not allowed.

If anything they're better for tournaments than other FW units, as their rules are free and easily accessible to anyone at any time.

At my local events experimental rules are allowed, and so far no riots have broken out. Amazing, but true.

Sometimes, FW's experimental rules do change: that first big Riptide model they did, for example.

Usually, though, they do remain the same when published in a book.

If anything, it's hard enough getting tournaments to allow Forgeworld models to begin with, much less Forgeworld army lists or Forgeworld "experimental rules".

Besides, just imagine the stigma if someone won a tournament with an experimental FW model in their army. Even if the model didn't do much of anything every game, there will still be people who will see it in the winner's army list and say "they only won because FW."

I didn't think Forgeworld has been a stigma for some time now, to be honest. Considering that most of the broken stuff that's dominated tourney scenes for some time has come out of good old fashioned GW 40k books, that seems a bit silly.

As far as I'm aware most experimental rules are changed when they are released.

However there are many fw units that are not legal in tournaments not just experimental rules. Most of which are just old and outdated. Because fw is generally slow to update them. The itc just voted to allow 6ed rules which works only really because 6ed is very similar to 7th but even those books have a few rules which don't work right.

There is nothing wrong with friendly games with experimental rules. That's the point to play to test the rules. It would be nice however if FW was quicker at updating rules.

FW rules at tournaments? Sure! Knock yourself out!

Experimental Rules? No. Wait for them to get in an IA book, please.

So much that I want to buy from them is experimental and since most places don't allow that I don't buy. I like to play with my toys hehe.

Up until the WK became a hot mess of awesome for next to no points I would have agreed with you. Then they released IA13 and a few months later the Chaos Knight and Kytan - it's unlikely we'll see them in a book for quite a while. As of now there are 7 units that are experimental, and even if you think the Tau suits are OP, they still pale compared to a WK IMHO. I just played in a tournament that allowed them, while banning CTA allies. The experimental units were no worse than any other good units in the game.
