Hello dakkaites! A few days ago, I decided to buy the Warhammer 40K Basing Kit (NOT THE FANATSY ONE!) and try it out, and I hoped it would spice up my Space Wolf bases. It did.
The first thing you notice when you open the box is the etched brass:

It has everything from aquilas to destroyed walls to steel plating (with aquilas!), and although I haven't tried it out yet, it looks and feels awesome. I actually have forest themed bases, but the brass would fit on anything from urban to desert to jungle.

The next thing you notice is the slate. You can choose between small (a bit larger than sand) and medium (head sized(28mm)). Although you can collect this from your own backyard, the slate is perfectly sized for the bases. I personally don't think one should use the slate on its own, I recommend using normal sand sprinkled with 1-2 medium and maybe 3-4 small slate pieces.

Now, the next thing you notice (and the reason I bought it) are the resin details. Ranging from some that will make perfect stand alone 40mm bases to those who cover up a 25mm base neatly, to the teeny tiny ones used for smaller details. As you can see on the picture, there are tons of bits and bobs hidden in them. With skulls, heads and trophies from Space Marines, Dark Angels, Chaos Marines, IG, SoB, Eldar, Dark Eldar and Space Wolves, these will fit with pretty much all armies you have.
Since it's made of resin, and the slate's pretty dusty, I recommend you to give everything a nice wash before using them.

Here's a finished base using things from the Basing Kit. As you see, the resin detail has a small 'lip', but that can easily be sanded down.

Materials used for the base:
25mm base
3mm cork
medium slate
small slate
resin detail, w/ IG canteen
Mordheim Tufts

I certainly recommend the box, if you're willing to sacrifice a box of guys for fancier bases

Thanks for reading!

If you can get your mitts on the Imperalis Basing Kit, that one is FANTASTIC. Unfortunately it is no longer being made (for whatever reason)

Hm, what does that one have?

Only buying the kit if the red bus ruler is included.

It's a good kit for starters, i.e. very small armies, and people with little experience. More experienced players are better off buying everything in higher quantities online / at craft shops as the stuff is much, much cheaper that way.

Aside from the slate and grain, the casted resin bits included floors and gratings and lots of Aquila stamped corridor type bits

Not worth it IMO. I can get 90% of it in a craft store and can make the other stuff out of anything I can find.

Yeah I picked it up a little while back to begin my collection. Helps speed things up for my batches of Orks. I'll need a couple more.

The only reason why I would even consider buying one of these would be the edged brass - and that is one of the laziest, most poorly executed one I have seen so far.

Honestly, if you do not know where to throw all your money, start doing charities.

For everyone else: There is nothing to see here, move along! Spend half an hour in your backyard, get some PVC glue and some bits and be set for life.

Thanks more showing the pictures, though! They cleared up the last doubt one could have.

Currently playing: Infinity, SW Legion

I quite like this, it looks a lot more useful than the fantasy ones, those really do contain parts you could grab elsewhere.
It's a shame they didn't throw some small grass tufts in to finish the bases.

100% agree with this... the GW def is not the worth the money in my opinion, unless your new to the hobby.
