I would say no. The option specifies that the Veteran Squad is upgraded to a Grenadier Squad, deliberately changing the name of the Squad.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
I only have the AM codex, and this could be for a different type of Vets, but the codex allows veterans to up upgraded with Grenadiers, Forward Sentries, and demolitions all at the same time.
