I haven't played since 4th edition and recently acquired some models by chance. Seems some are quite strong. There seems to be a lot of options to fill out an 1850 list. I would like the list to be pretty competitive.

I have

3 wave serpents
2 boxes of wraithguard
1 wraithknight
4 dark reapers with exarch
1 nightspinner
5 fire dragons with exarch
10 dire avengers with exarch
10 howling banshees with exarch
1 wraithlord

I was originally thinking of using the wraithhost formation? What are my best options? I am ok with purchasing some bikes if that would make a better list. I would really like to use the wraithguard and wraithknight since they seem pretty cool in my opinion. Appreciate any comments. Thank you.

Here's what I've come up with after only a few moments dapping about:

Wraith Host
-Spiritseer.
-Wraithguard (5), D-Scythes + Wave Serpent (Twin Scatter Lasers, underslung Shuriken Cannon, Holofields).
-Wraithguard (5), D-Scythes + Wave Serpent (Twin Scatter Lasers, underslung Shuriken Cannon, Holofields).
-Wraithguard (5), Wraithcannons + Wave Serpent (Twin Bright Lance, underslung Shuriken Cannon, Holofields).
-Wraithlord, 2x Flamer, Ghostglaive, Bright Lance.
-Wraithknight, 2x Heavy Wraithcannon, Scatter Laser.

Aspect Host
-Dark Reapers (4), inc. Exarch (Starshot Missiles).
-Dire Avengers (7), inc. Exarch.
-Howling Banshees (7), inc. Exarch (Executioner).

1850 on the dot, italicized the models you don't have currently.

I like the idea on the wraithhost. I was wondering about the banshees and the avengers. Won't they get shot to hell if they don't have a transport? Thank you very much for your response.

Yes indeedy they will, but there's not really many points left over after plugging tricks into the Wraithhost. You could take off several of the upgrades (underslung cannons, holofields) to afford more Serpents.

An alternative would be to replace the Aspect Host with a CAD (Combined Arms Detachment, the basic one from the rulebook), using the Dire Avengers as the troops component - this would mean buying a HQ, but would allow you to use the Nightspinner.

Thank you for your help so far. Keeping the current wraithhost as is (I like this a lot by the by) what would you add to the list if I were to just go out and buy models that would make it a better list?

Give the exarch tempest launcher. It's amazing at killing bikes. And if you want to add to the army in a positive way, you could do a lot worse than making your aspect host 1 x dark reapers, 2 x warp spiders...

that has no detachment in it though so it is unbound

EDIT: ignore that!!! formations are also detachments apparently - wow - how daft

I'm just curious why you put troops like wroath gaurd in a transport? Is it so you can zoom them up close turn one or? Cause I mean one transport is about 3 wraithgaurd jw

Short-ranged weapons (12" and 8"), moving at infantry-pace (6") will never catch their targets - you'll be forced to shoot whatever doesn't out-maneuver you, even if it's gretchin, rather than being able to choose your targets.

Battle Focus and the guaranteed 6" from a Warhost compensate somewhat if you really want to foot-slog, but even then they work better when combined with a transport.
