@MWH - it's a reference to a comic strip where two people are arguing over something (skub) that matters to neither, but they fiercely contest it. Essentially, "skub" can be substituted for anything that can start an internet argument that is ultimately futile, because neither the pro or anti skub camp is going to change their mind. The counter to this is that the Socratic method is well-founded in academia: asking and answering questions to identify and eliminate contradictions as a mechanism to strengthen or weaken one viewpoint or another. With respect to AoS, I would say, actually, that a lot of these debates are not just skub arguments, but expressions of equally valid, rational viewpoints. Even if someone doesn't change their mind about the game, understanding the other people's viewpoint about why they like or dislike it (and debating it) isn't a waste of time.
