Formations are an abomination, and the primary reason I have given up on regular 40k.

The individual who cooked that up should be flogged.

There is no scenario where I could ever envision 30k formations.

Dakka, Ive been out of the loop for a while now. Been wanting to start a 30K army for a long time, and now seeing this looks like a steal. Looks like theyre all pretty decent quality, and they look like pretty sweet models.
Thanks Dakka, atm dont have the time to look through 56 pages XD

Definite steal.
FW equivalent would cost around £100 just for the 30 marines & that's without any weapons or other options like sergeant's sword or pouches. Add on a dread (£50) & the termies (£40) + transfers & you're saving 50% easy. & you get a game too.

Agreed. They really complex too especially when they talk about detachments & formations in the same sentence like in the Khorne dex.

Yes this is an absolute steal, I pre ordered 3 sets so that I have tactical marines to spare for future use.

I added it up weeks ago -

Artificier Armor Centurion, Cataphractii Terminator Praetor £33.00 For the set of two
Mk IV Maximus Marine Squad (x10) £48 plus £24 for the bolters
Mk IV Maximus Marine Squad (x10) £48 plus £24 for the bolters
Mk IV Maximus Marine Squad (x10) £48 plus £24 for the bolters
Cataphractii Terminator Squad (x5) £35 ea plus £17 for the weapons
Contemptor Dreadnought £33 ea (minus arms), plus £9.5 an arm x4
Coming out to a grand total of:

£372 = $568.00!!!

and at $150 a box.......that's a 74% savings compared to FW models

& depending on how you make the force, one box is 1100-1300 points!

That, plus, 100 more hours to clean up the resin models. Some (not all) of the plastic models are just pain better, too!

Alright thats what I thought!
Honestly its hard to believe, thats why i was a little skeptical.
Maybe GW is really trying to make a big push into FW territory and this is their "we can do it better and cheaper than you" release?

Take off £36 because 10 Tigrus bolters are only £12, not £24, and add around another £10 for some special and heavy weapons for the squads, maybe a bit more because you can only buy them in singles from bitz sellers.. It's still a blinding deal.

No. If GW wanted to take FW territory they'd just do it, seeing as Forge World is part of Games Workshop.

It's even a good deal compared to normal 40k marines too

3 10 man tactical squads = $120
5 terminators = $50
1 Dreadnought = $46
1 Terminator Leader Guy = around $30
= $246.. almost $100 savings.

So you buy it for all of those models plus a free game included in the box!

Kinda curious to see how the game works and the models get divvied up.. like, it isn't 2 even forces with 2 different leader guys and stuff like that. Or is it more the kinda thing where you paint up your whole set one way, and your friend brings his marines to play against and you end up needing 2 sets to really play it? If you were buying just this box and only playing Horus Heresy, how would you know which minis get used for which force or the other?

You forgot "1 power armored monopose leader guy"

The total is more like $274, so the savings vs. the 40k equivalents is about 45%.

Also, I believe the breakdown they have for playing the HH:BaC board game is that UM get 10 tacs, the Cataphract Praetor, and the five Cataphractii terminators, WB get 20 tacs, the Chaplain, and the Contemptor.

I think GW might be doing something quite clever by releasing a few cheap(er) plastic HH kits while not cannibalising FW's sales, as it'll mean that newbies can get into HH relatively cheaply, then cash out if they want the really flashy toys.

I think this is part of their plan as well. Release some generic Heresy marines, and watch as everyone flocks to Forge World to buy rulebooks, tanks, Legion accessories, and new weapon load-outs.

I'm forcing myself to resist the FW side until I get these minis all painted, and they're not getting painted till my Sigmarines are done. Since it will probably take me 7 years to get to that point, I'm hoping there will be more HH plastics instead

Not really planning to play 30K though, i'm gonna be building em as a regular 40k marine army. They just like wearing old armor, cuz they don't make em like they used to.

What makes this box really special is that you get all new MPP sprues for a significant discount. Usually, GW's box sets have been snapfit or mostly older sprues.

As these guys are compatible with the FW upgrade kits would it be crazy to assume they will be also interchangeable with standard plastic marine bits?

I plan on getting the box set in the new year with a couple of space wolf boxes and then kit bashing

Yeah.

I just spent $9 (total) on Scribd for all the HH books (Vol 1-3).

Bought a new Spartan kit for $90 off ebay.

Will buy the bits I need after choosing the legion I want to do too off ebay....

Here you go, HBMC... Tiles in super high res glory. Like, 21megapixel, both sides I uploaded them onto Dakka so you can click on them and zoom in to minute detail.

Fronts:

Backs:

Note that there are 2 different hex patterns. 2 have the flat edges on the long side, and 2 on the short side. It allows you to combine them in funky shapes. Also, the fronts and backs can be mixed:

Finally -- those boards are big. They punch out of a piece of cardboard that's the same size of the box (large size box a la Dark Vengeance), and the hex board takes up most of the coardboard.

I wish GW would produce and sell a whole series of cardboard hex tiles for gaming >.<
