If you just want to play to get people hooked it's very cheap. Go to the downloads section on the Guildball site and down load EVERYTHING. Rulebook, counters, player cards, the lot.,
You can print off the paper dolls and stick them to any spare bases you have lying around. Get a 2x2 and a 3x3 piece of cloth and mark out the field. Grab some dice and ta-daa.... you've got a game without spending any money.
Pretty much everything in this game is a "nice to have" and not a necessity. But they are such nice things to have that you'll get them anyway.

There's a few candidates and GB is one, but I've a few questions.
1) There's nobody playing locally, so I'll need everything to demo the game and get people hooked. What do I need, and what are the nice to haves?
2) The mat is sold out everywhere, so what are people using to play on?
3) Are there any common issues with starting, or is it just figures, dice, rules, go?
1 - Henry has it absolutely spot on. Everything you need (bar pitches, dice, tape) is available to download.
2 - The (free!) rules have the pitch dimensions (iirc) so you can just use your standard gaming surface but mark off an appropriately sized area. The goal token is 50mm diameter btw.
3 - I struggled getting my head around the mechanics to be hinest. You can do an action, move, fight, dodge in ANY order. I was well and truly indoctrinated in to the GW Standard. Move, then attack, then wheatever. It's an incredibly fluid game, and once you get used to that it really opens up.

1. Trinity Club in Taunton have a growing GB following and are running their own (sold out) tournament in January. A bit of drive for you, but probably worth popping over for getting a feel for the game.
2. Mat isn't compulsory, you can mark out a pitch on any 3' by 3' surface.
3. Tokens - you need a lot of Tokens to monitor things. However, I've found that even with official tokens available, many people use their own stuff even at tournaments.
So, I went to my first Guild Ball tournament this past weekend (21 players). The blog post for the event will be coming in a couple of days, but I want to mention a couple things I realized about the game during the event:
Timed games & Terrain
First, holy crap, Guild Ball becomes so much more fun when your playing under the clock - so much so that I think I'll start asking people do to so if they aren't still in the "first games, learning to play" stage. I've played a few games that have ground down to a halt thanks to analysis paralysis - trying to figure out which models to activate in what order. Being on the clock means you have to actually watch the table during your opponents turn and think about what you're going to do next.
These were also the first games I'd played with terrain, and while they didn't seem to impact the game all that much, there were some times when players had to move differently or use abilities that they wouldn't have needed to if the table was clear. So I can't wait until Steamforged comes out with their plastic terrain pack.
I was looking at terrain for GB, if only to make a goal.
So, I got some crates, to stack and scatter.
I only played 1 game, but it is enough. Time to order more stuff...

I'm bemused you enjoy playing on the clock I find it quite stressful. If you play a beat em up team (as opposed to a scoring team), you will inevitably use up more time in activations rolling for attacks, something I've become acutely aware of as a Brewers player.
I guess it's all about knowing what you want to do when starting an activation. When I've got Honor set up for a kill-run (Legendary Play popped, Tooled Up by Marbles, who's also engaging the target), I know I only want to get 2 success as a base - because that's 4 Momentous damage, 7 times (28 damage as a minimum on most players). I can do that pretty quickly - pull an Influence token, roll eight dice, 2 success, 4 momentous damage, rinse and repeat.

I bought and painted the Butchers in the last month. I also made 2 goals and a display tray. I've played several demo style 3v3 games, and then yesterday I played 3 full games.
I played a demo game at Vapnartak and was sold on the game. Picks up Mason because it sounds like they're the closest to my playstyle and also seem to have one of the more even gender mixes. Was recommended Engineers as an opponent for them so I picked up them as well. Project #3 in my painting queue.
This game, all at once, blew up in popularity around here in the Hudson Valley/Capitol region of NY.
I guess I have to join the fun (in part because a designer has asked me to deconstruct why this game is so mechanically successful), and the timing seems right with TheWarStore and MiniaturesMarket suddenly supporting the game in a big way.
Ordered a pitch, because its gorgeous, a book, and one of everybody for Union and Brewers (for the wife and I).
I saw the pics and info on FB about the Hunters team.
V2 of the rules, too, and an offer to get the new stuff cheap at Salute. I expect they'll be doing that at other shows.

Not yet. Mat Hart talked briefly about Steam Forge's future in the Ozball podcast and said they'd probably look to do both a Sci-Fi game and Fantasy game at some point, noting that it hadn't done GW any harm.
In the meantime, Guild Ball more than keeps me happy. Pulled off my first 12-0 the other day

SO MANY places to buy from besides MM that I have zero sympathy for you.

Been playing a lot. I play so many different games, I never thought I would have a "main game", but Guild Ball is it.

I have $350 in store credit at Miniatures Market... it was buy there, or don't buy it. :-p

Are any UK posters planning on attending Salute and willing to ninja-shop for some of us in the US? I'd love to buy the Hunters Guild Salute bundle, but it absolutely must be picked up at the event.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Really stupid question, as well. Has anyone magnetized Avarise and Greede? If so, any tips? I've got three included magnets... I assume its one on Avarise's stomach, one on Greede's back.... and then...?
Am I going to need more magnets since I assume i'll need to magnetize Greede's foot and base for when he's running on his own?

Quick question about the rule book. In the season two rules it says it contains an updated version of the season one rules, does that mean that the season one book isn't required or is there other things in their that are required to play?

Keep in mind the materials required to play will always be free, as its a core tenet of the game.
The season 2 book has a new Season 2 Plot deck which can also be optionally purchased as a physical deck of cards w/chits. The book also has all the Season 2 players, and a new errata-included revised set of rules.
That said, all the Season 1 rules, the same errata, and all the players cards are right on their website, so buying the new book is more for the continued plot, and just supporting the publisher. :-)
Hey guys, sorry to barge in, but just wanted to make folk aware that we provide a huge range of tokens for Guild Ball - and we'll be releasing all the Season 2 tokens around the same time as it's all released.
Now onto the fun stuff - what do you guys think of the new captains? I cannot wait to get my hands on Hammer, as I think he'll make the Masons the real "do everything" team that they've always been billed to be. I'm also very excited about Fillet...
When playing Butchers i've always enjoyed Meathook and Boiler despite Meathook in particular not being the best option most of the time. As such, Fillet has me excited because I think there will be a really strong synergy there.
In other cases, I feel like the S2 caps might go underloved. Obulus is soooo strong for Morticians that I don't see many switching him out.
Some are just interesting lateral moves. My wife is committed to making Veteran Rage her main, mostly because Red Fury (iirc) is so versatile and makes it essentially possible for him to ever end up in a position where Influence on him ends up wasted.
Lovely minis above! And thanks for the heads up on MM lack lack of stock, I was thinking of preordering the mat through them but might get a custom one from Deep Cut instead.
I'm so stoked for the Hunters, they look incredible
