Hello all,

So the general discussion is still listed as "Warhammer Fantasy", so I figured I would put my dislike of AOS aside and maybe we can get a bunch of people to talk about what they loved most about Warhammer Fantasy.

Let me kick it off...

One of my favorite memories was the vampire army I had made for 6th ed fantasy , I was living down south and played at a game store with zero players for fantasy, 5th ed 40k was coming out so that was all the buzz if I remember correctly.
I used blocks of zombies in the front.
A Wight king with my army standard.
2 vamps on foot, and 2 solid units of grave guards with great weapons. I loved the great weapons back in the day because in that edition of fantasy you get to strike first if you charged.
I always loved that army, it was so fun to just have a wall of zombies catching my prey units and having my grave guard annihilate them when they caught up.
It had its flaws though as I remember my vampire lord blew himself up on the regular with miscasts. It was always a fun army to play before the vamps started getting more monsters.

So there you have it readers, just a short sum up of some good memories of warhammer fantasy, no need to argue over what’s better, or ask advice on an army.
Let’s just have a nice chat about what you love, or loved about fantasy.
What comes to mind when you think about the new extinct game?

So who did you play against if there were zero fantasy players?

One of my favorite memories was during a 600 point campaign my store ran in 8th. I went against a friend's slaneesh demon army and the enemy general was killed by my Knights Panther Champion's horse! We had a campaign rule that heroes and lords slaying the enemy general got to roll on the chaos gifts chart, the store owner decided my horse should roll on it too for fun.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I think my favorite thing about it might have been the scenario potential. Yes, even with points involved One of my favorite games involved a scenario from the General's Compendium (and oh, man, that thing alone could be my entire post here) where the attacker could bring back destroyed units, but had to wipe out the defender entirely to claim victory. So there we were, a tribe of greenskins closing ranks atop a gentle slope, raising shield to weather the inevitable elven arrow storm...

Except for my cavalry, who couldn't understand the concept of not running downhill into the enemy ranks (they're right there, come on now) and proceeded to smash gleefully into their lines. Turns out bringing back units of archers does very little good if there's a bunch of frothing, blood-spattered lunatic orcs on boars standing right next to you. In the end, I only had a couple savage boar boyz left alive out of an entire wing of mounted troops, but they were enough - and they gave my infantry the space they needed to survive, too!

Actually, my cavalry always managed to do something wacky. My absolute favorite Warhammer moment involved my warboss' spider-mounted bodyguard swarming a castle wall, cutting their way through the defenders to face the enemy Thane. The warboss challenged him and scored a whopping two killing blows (I like to think he beat him to death with his own Oathstone), only to realize that the Thane's own bodyguard had just finished mopping up his boyz and had started to look at him funny. He scampered back up the wall, had his spider shot out from under him, rallied after he'd reached what seemed to be a safe distance, turned around to make a few rude gestures at the stunties, and went down in a hail of crossbow bolts.

And then there was the first time I used savage orcs...both regular boyz and the boar-mounted variety. The footsloggers spent their entire first game fighting amongst themselves, except for the one turn they spotted a group of gutter runners trying to sneak around the flank. They butchered them, then went immediately back to rolling ones for animosity checks. The boar riders (boarserkaz, as I liked to call them) had similar issues - they ignored a beautiful flank charge on a group of marauders, instead electing to spend the turn arguing over who had the best war paint. Next turn - the turn they were faced with an approaching unit of chosen knights - they decided to roll a six.

And then charge.

It did not go well for them.

Well when I was down south I used to play at a store called Hobby chest, and like I said zero fantasy players were in that store!
Thankfully I had a few friends who lived off base down south who were pro fantasy. I also had very persistant friends from Maine, who I would play with whenever i would visit.

Now that i moved back to Maine, I have the downstairs at my house to play at, my friends have dubbed it as "The Basement Warlords".
One of my friends loves to point out that I have more terrain then any local stores around, so luring people over for a game isnt to difficult.

Mostly now I play 40k at my local store. Now though, since AOS every fantasy player I know just got back on the 40k train.
Thats ok though, I love me some 40k.

Love it, love everything about that story.

I hope you still own the general's compendium, mine is on my shelf. I have never not been excited to pull it off the shelf and give it a once over, lots of great ideas in that book. I have always wanted to do the ship battles

I do! The ship battles were interesting, I tried them out (using books, popsicle-stick rafts, and one crudely made boat), but for me, the major draw was always the campaign section. I loved loved loved all the imagination-capturing ideas in that. Campaigns were always my thing. Doesn't matter what I'm playing, there's got to be some kind of backstory and stakes!

The one thing I don't like about the book is the binding. Mine's practically falling apart.

Speaking of campaigns, I'm curious to know what the gods granted that horse! Always seemed like the mounts did more damage than the riders to me, but then again, my riders were usually goblins

Hmmmmm.....I remember this one time I pitted my high elves against a team of chaos dwarves and warriors. I believe it was a 2k pointer. Round one chaos players go first, the dwarves fire there cannons both direct hit, one on my archers containing a wizard, the other a squad of swordmasters with my general. Everyone died. I gave up right there. Shortest warhammer game ever

I roll 2s

My favorite memories from fantasy was when I was in the Army. We would set up our table in the day room in the barracks using the pool table and poncho liner. Put some magazines under the poncho liner for hills and my buddy had some home made terrain. Get a couple cases of beer and get drunk off our asses while rolling dice all night. Usually did this on our 4 day weekends and would play for a couple of days. Tried to get back into fantasy a few years ago but just wasn't the same without my army buddies. Really miss those days
