Yes, and? You're telling me that a president legally changing the name of a mountain, as asked to by the people of the state in which it is situated, will blackball the Democratic party? That sounds ridiculous. You're implying that the people of Ohio give a gak about Obama, mountains or McKinley. Not sure they do. Show me the proof.

True enough, but Fox seems the only one to villify Obama over just about anything.

"President Obama saved the life of a young child today, diving to push him out of the path of a moving van."

And Fox be like:
"fething Barry just couldn't resist the urge to get close to a child. SMH."

Or like "Obama saves the next hitler, kills van driver"

Heck, at this point I would settle on a half decent explanation on why it is more important what Ohio wants vs what Alaska wants.

To be fair he was there for other reasons...reason I actually support...renaming a mountain to honor a living population of 2300 people...come on man. Hundreds of millions of people call that Mt. McKinley!

2,300 living people is still more than one dead mediocre president.

And the population of a whole state, acting through their legislature, with broad congressional support at the federal level against how many people that are actually bothered by this?

Honestly, other than "Obama" why do you care? What is your connection to the mountain of the name? Other than "it's always been that way", which is of course a lie, why does your opinion matter more than the actual people in the actual state?

I consider Mt. McKinley a national monument because It is the biggest and baddest mountain we got. The purpose of national monuments is to inspire American exceptionalism - not to appease locals. Alaskans even got a fair compromise which renamed the NATIONAL park around the mountain Denali.

It's not about Ohio - they might be the ones who were most resistant to the name change but It is about honoring an American president - who was assassinated in office (which IMO makes it even more insulting to remove the name).

Naming a mountain after low tier president really doesn't inspire American exceptionalism. They didn't change the name from "Mount Constitution" or anything.

The name change doesn't just appease locals, it reflects that it McKinley is a kind of dumb name, while Denali is an awesome name.

There's probably a lesson about our countries staggering indifference to Native American heritage in there somewhere, but I'm too tired to fish it out.

Ok, so you see it as a symbol which is fine. You're missing the symbolism on the other side of your opinion though. Re-naming it in accordance with what the natives have called it for centuries is a symbolic honour for them and all Native Americans. It isn't much (but then again neither is the flip side) but it's something. And yes, when taken in that context it honours more than just the 2300 or so people of that tribe.

Either way, I don't see your view of Obama acting on his own without prompting in doing this. Didn't the Alaskan government petition for this, just like the Ohio government petitioned against? So it's a case of him weighing the options and picking a side rather than stepping over everything and acting on his own. The way you made it sound, Obama went rogue and was all like "feth you, Ohio. feth you, Alaska. The feth outta tha way, bitches. It's Barry's time to shine. I'm gonna do this gak because it makes me all tingly on the inside."

Won't my face be red if this is exactly what happens?

How is that ridiculous? Ohio has been fighting for years to keep the name...Obama oversteps congress to declare the name change himself... is really that hard to see the political damage that this could cause? Obama didn't win Ohio by much - little things like this can throw an election.

Did "Ohio" fight for years to keep the name? Did their senators and representatives get elected on a platform of "this name will not change"? Do the people of Ohio hold rallies to keep the name?

Did a single city in Ohio fight to keep the name?

Or did a single person who happens to be from Ohio who had a personal interest because of where he is from fight to keep the name?

I feel that you are placing just a little too much weight on how "Ohio" as a whole feels about this.

I don't know about that...Ohio does elect it's representatives in congress, so he is supposed to speak for his people. True there are probably people on both sides of the issue there. Typically presidents do well in their own states though - I think that's why you see so much support from Ohio congressmen on this for over 20 years. Like I said though - I am not from Ohio - I actually don't much like the place.

McKinley might have been low tier - but he did do great things. Denali might sound cooler than McKinley but I don't think that is at all significant because that is just a matter of preference - it's no reason to change the name of the largest mountain in a country.

Wasn't Mckinley the guy that started a brutal oppressive and unpopular conflict that killed thousands in the Philippines?

Ironic to rename a mountain after him over the indigenous people's wishes, then fight to keep to keep the name of a man that cared nothing for indigenous people's wishes.

Also his only accomplishment in my eyes is exiting stage left for America personified President Teddy Roosevelt lol.

Well, if it's national the it's settled since almost all members of congress were okay with changing the name.

Just give the mountain back already and be done with it.

I also fail to see how random president number what was it again needs to have the biggest mountain of North America named after him. If you guys are going to name it after a president, at least name it after Washington, Roosevelt or Reagan or someone else who is actually known outside of the US.
Just my opinion, not that I care about how the American occupiers name Bolshaya Gora

Why should they name it after someone other countries know about?

Well as an American, a lot of Americans can only name the presidents that the rest of the world can anyways so I guess its all one and the same.

Yup that one lol. The one that was washed out of US history books because of how absolutely evil it was.

So yah lets us honor McKinley with a mountain.

If McCain wasn't a war hero because he got caught, them McKinley must have been a pretty crappy president to get himself assassinated. Trump should at least promise to name it after the president that got shot and finished a 90 minute speech instead of dying.

President McKinley:

*25th President of the US
*Staunch supporter of peace, raised taxes on trade-goods and imports, annexed the Republic of Hawaii (incidentally, this would later permit the Obama Presidency), supported the rights of laborers and would, today, be considered a Progressive.

...21st century Republican Hero since sometime last week.

Hey, if McKinley had not supported and pushed the agenda of America's "benevolent Imperialism", Hawaii probably would never have become a state, is all I'm saying.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another.
