Ok, so you see it as a symbol which is fine. You're missing the symbolism on the other side of your opinion though. Re-naming it in accordance with what the natives have called it for centuries is a symbolic honour for them and all Native Americans. It isn't much (but then again neither is the flip side) but it's something. And yes, when taken in that context it honours more than just the 2300 or so people of that tribe.

Either way, I don't see your view of Obama acting on his own without prompting in doing this. Didn't the Alaskan government petition for this, just like the Ohio government petitioned against? So it's a case of him weighing the options and picking a side rather than stepping over everything and acting on his own. The way you made it sound, Obama went rogue and was all like "feth you, Ohio. feth you, Alaska. The feth outta tha way, bitches. It's Barry's time to shine. I'm gonna do this gak because it makes me all tingly on the inside."

How is that ridiculous? Ohio has been fighting for years to keep the name...Obama oversteps congress to declare the name change himself... is really that hard to see the political damage that this could cause? Obama didn't win Ohio by much - little things like this can throw an election.

Did "Ohio" fight for years to keep the name? Did their senators and representatives get elected on a platform of "this name will not change"? Do the people of Ohio hold rallies to keep the name?

Did a single city in Ohio fight to keep the name?

Or did a single person who happens to be from Ohio who had a personal interest because of where he is from fight to keep the name?

I feel that you are placing just a little too much weight on how "Ohio" as a whole feels about this.

I don't know about that...Ohio does elect it's representatives in congress, so he is supposed to speak for his people. True there are probably people on both sides of the issue there. Typically presidents do well in their own states though - I think that's why you see so much support from Ohio congressmen on this for over 20 years. Like I said though - I am not from Ohio - I actually don't much like the place.

Frankly Denali sounds more manly

McKinley might have been low tier - but he did do great things. Denali might sound cooler than McKinley but I don't think that is at all significant because that is just a matter of preference - it's no reason to change the name of the largest mountain in a country.

Well, if it's national the it's settled since almost all members of congress were okay with changing the name.

Just give the mountain back already and be done with it.

I also fail to see how random president number what was it again needs to have the biggest mountain of North America named after him. If you guys are going to name it after a president, at least name it after Washington, Roosevelt or Reagan or someone else who is actually known outside of the US.

Why should they name it after someone other countries know about?

Well as an American, a lot of Americans can only name the presidents that the rest of the world can anyways so I guess its all one and the same.
