How do you feel about the 7E DA codex?
I like it, it's competitive and well made.
I like it, it's not very competitive but it's still fun to play.
It's okay.
I don't like it, it's competitive but boring to play.

'sup, ladies and gents. Now that the 7E DA have been out for awhile, and people have had time to digest the codex and get some games in, I was curious on how Dakka feels about the codex. How strong is the codex, especially in relation to other marine armies? How many competitive builds and units does it have? Are the formations any good? etc

Okay at best due to the poor writing. Deathwing is better than it was before though, which is good.

Couple of niggles (no solo-Deathwing, mistake in the Ravenwing detachment HQ's, loss of fun stuff like Sacred Standards, Librarian Conclave DLC), but overall it's on par with the SM codex (which is rare for a DA codex).

Meh. Seems like it could hold its own, but the Dark Angels don't appeal to me.

Aside form some parts that are in desperate need of an FAQ, the Dark Angels codex is at least as good as the Space Marine codex, which is very high praise.

Ravenwing are as good as the marines, Greenwing got a nice formation, but are still a bit meh, deathwing got shafted, 50pts for a th/ss...

On the whole it was a step up from the previous books, but still missed out on fixing deathwing as a solo force.

Well Ravenwing became a lot of fun thanks to the super jink, we got grav guns, and interromancy is hilarious. I'd say it was an excellent update, even if Deathwing still isn't useful or functional.

Although we STILL haven't gotten a damn generic "build your own chapter master" for people who Don't play the main chapter and don't like to proxy Azrael.

it's got some mistakes like the ravenwing HQ mess up but it's a pretty good codex, deathwing are still mostly a lame duck but that's just terminators

I personally love it. It's a huge step up from the 6th ed. codex (of course, where do you go from the bottom but up? ). Ravenwing got boosted into orbit with their super-jinks and formations (too bad about the HQ issue though ), and Greenwing are competitive if you run a Lion's Blade, especially against melee-centric armies. Deathwing, while impossible to really use alone, can still be pretty good, although they suffer from the problems that all termies face these days. Perhaps the biggest gripe I have is that Azrael is really not any good anymore. All he needed was AP2 on his weapon and perhaps Eternal Warrior, and he would be spectacular (even if he was a bit more expensive). He may still see use for giving 50-man Guardsman or Conscript blobs 4+ invuln. saves for the lolz, though!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I think it's ok, but saying it's as good as Marines is pushing it.

Well at least Azrael can choose his Warlord trait, and at the very least he can duel non-Space Marine characters.

dark angels are a prime example of how unbound can be really really broken. against codex chaos space marines even a new book might not be enough to handle them as an unbound force

the hammer of caliban has all kinds of wild applications that will become what i think is the go to answer for dealing with the new IG codex when it drops because it will just crush any tank formations they get under raw weight of firepower. its a hard counter to steelhost as is.

the ravenwing became very strong this edition with virtually no bad ravenwing units except for the nephilim which is still underpreforming but nobody is perfect i suppose.

the deathwing are absolutely silly as an unbound force if your fighting chaos marines a lot. mixed with cypher you can literally just steamroll everyone.

really my biggest issues is that beyond the lions blade nobody will field veterans still despite becoming silly strong if you can get them snowballing out of control via magic and relics, azreal is totally worthless with 0 synergy going on, deathwing struggle to remain relevant still without doing some really weird things to the point where even i am strongly considering ripping out 750pts of models from my biggest list to replace with other things they struggle so hard.

my final issue is that asmodai continues to have a orthless relic the blades of reason need a buff maybe ap3 and grant him +1 base attacks??

DA army: 3500pts,
admech army: 600pts
ravenguard: 565 pts

I wouldn't say nobody would field Veterans. They could be a useful dakka spam squad with grav guns.

They're a very cheap way to get LOTS of Combi-Weapons in a Drop Pod. So you'd treat them like a suicide Sternguard squad.
