So as we all know, D Weapons can cause multiple wounds upon single hits, for instance getting nailed with a D Weapon like a knight For Reaper and he rolling a 6 against your terminators or what have you.

A question however arose when I was wondering just how it is you're supposed to roll your saves.

Do you;

A) roll to determine how many wounds you suffer from a D Weapon, then attempt to save them individually

Or B) Roll your invuln save first and if you fail take X determined wounds depending on the result of your opponents roll on the D Table

B) - roll your save and then take wounds.

you'd roll To-Hit and instead of rolling To-Wound, you roll on the D-Table and get a number of wounds - all of those are allocated to one model. statistically it doesn't matter whether or not you do a single save for the hit or multple saves, one for each wound. I dont think the rules say either way is wrong or right, so I'd go with whatever the defending player prefers (who then has the choice of gambling for the one big save or rather deal with the more averaged multiple rolls - which I like as a game mechanic)

Save once, then roll the D3. The D3 part replaces the part of wounding that basically says

"roll to wound. Roll saves. If failed reduce models wounds by 1 " the 1 now becomes D3

It does matter, you should roll the save first. You don't get to roll multiple saves, only one save for D3 wounds. Not 3 saves because you d3'd and rolled a 3.

There's a significant difference in taking (and passing) three 5++ saves as compared to one 5++ save that causes 3 wounds.

There is no statistical (!) difference. Throw them enough times and you will end up with the same amount of unsaved wounds total.

Of course there is.

Chances of survival rolling 1 save: 33.3%

Chances of survival rolling 3 saves: 3.7%

For a 1-wound model, there is a significant difference between having to only apss a single 5++ and having to pass 3 5++'s. Remember that D-wounds are applied to models, not units.

"survival for a 1 wound model" is clearly a different metric than "amount of unsaved wounds", isn't it? But you're correct, for 1-2 wound models the single roll is favourable, I was only thinking in wounds dealt.

There is a huge variation, as you cannot get 1 or 2 wounds with passing or failing one save, but can when you are takin g a sequence.

Add in that they are also possibly causing instant death, and the by-the-rules method is by far the best.

Or a model that doesn't have Eternal Warrior and is T5 or less.
