Subject: Stating the game with the Slave 1, where to go from here?

I've played some of the starter and had a blast. I'm starting with the Slave 1 because it's always been my favorite SW ship. What should I buy next? I have heard that the TIE defender is good. Will I need another ship for 100ish points? What should I get? Thanks

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.
Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.
And he will hold the line.

In short, everything. At the bare minimum you need at least the core set (templates, dice, damage deck) and then whatever else you fancy.
I'm starting with the Slave 1 because it's always been my favorite SW ship.
The Firespray is okay for Imperials (Imperial Boba's ability is lame, Imperial Kath's is mediocre). The Firespray is much better in the Scum & Villainy faction where the pilots have much, much better abilities.
I have heard that the TIE defender is good.
Not really. It's a little better now with the new Twin Ion Engine Mk. II modification that comes in the TIE Punisher expansion. It frees up their dial if they get stressed (either from Push the Limit or if they are given a stress token from an opponent) because without the modification, their only green maneuvers were straights. However, the problem is still that the Defender is overcosted for what it brings to the table. That being said, I've seen Rexler Brath utterly destroy people, but you're going to have to spend almost, if not, half of your squad points on him which really isn't worth it in the end.
Will I need another ship for 100ish points?
More ships is always a good thing. Figure out a list you want to fly using a squad builder and then buy the ships you need to fly it!

Thanks for the reply. One of my friends is giving me his extra movement templates, deck and dice so I don't think I need the core.
For either faction, what would be good supporting ships? My budget limits me to only 3. I don't really know the rules but I was thinking for Imperials, Firespray with Tier bomber and Defender. Would other ships be better?
No idea what's good for S&V.

If you already have the Firespray, then get the Most Wanted expansion pack. It's abit steeper than a single ship expansion, but it's a great way to start Scum and Villainy and get double duty on your ship. It also has three ships in it, plus extra cards if you ever want to use a HWK-290.

Fair enough, you'll want the rule book which is available in PDF for from FFG. Still, the core set is worth it just in terms of what you pay and what you get. Also, if you plan on play competitively, starting in January of next year you'll need the damage deck from the new Episode VII core set they released last Friday.

It really depends on what you want to do with the game. Do you want to keep it a beer & pretzels game with your friends? Then buy and play what you like and don't worry about the meta and all that silly business. Do you want to play in a competitive setting? Then you'll need to figure out what synergizes with what and work on making the best list you can (of course, you can still play competitively with things that are considered "sub par" and have a good time).
The game is relatively well balanced, but not all ships are equal.
No idea what's good for S&V.
Just about everything except the Scyk and the StarViper.
Which you might, because the S&V HWK-290 named pilots are nasty. The generic might even see more use with the introduction of Twin Laser Turret (I've already seen quite a few Rebel HWKs sporting it).

I agree... get the Most Wanted box and a HWK-290 or another Y-Wing.
With a Y-Wing, Most Wanted, and the Slave 1 you already have you could build something like this.
[UNNAMED SQUADRON]

It's also out of stock and awaiting a reprint, so you might have trouble finding it. :(

I was also going to say, my FLGS has 4 of them. They are out in the wild, fret not. I think it is, for a more expensive box set, a very good value.
