Hah, don't start with Praetorians! I've found this unit problematic in Necron army - several rules are bad written.

There are some really bad rules about them discussed everywhere

1st problem is about that what you ask. Most of unofficial FAQ's (like ETC FAQ) says that you cannot put them into Night Scythe, as they are jump infantry. You can, however, take NS as dedicated transport, but can't embark them into it.
Moreover, you can't embark units to NS during the game at all, as it's zooming flyer.

In the other hand, somehow using NS as dedicated transport for praetorians (so - empty flyer) can be useful, especially in formation with Stalker - NS will receive bonus too (rerolling to hit and to wound).

2nd problem is their Rod of Covenant weapon. It have two profiles - melee and ranged and according to RAW you cannot shoot/overwatch and use melee bonus (AP2) in same turn. This, howevwer, should be FAQ's as most of people play otherwise, unaware of this rule. But rule is very literal and strict, disallowing this.

So if you do not want to discuss rules with everyone - avoid Praets. Or use them without NS / Rods for start.

If you've your heart set on Praetorians, there are some fun things you can do without getting into too many fights. Try something like this;

+++ New Roster (994pts) +++

++ Necrons: Codex (2015) (Combined Arms Detachment) ++

+ HQ +

Orikan the Diviner [Warlord Trait: Enduring Will]

+ Troops +

Immortals [Night Scythe]
····10x Immortal [10x Gauss Blaster]

Immortals
····5x Immortal [5x Gauss Blaster]

++ Necrons: Codex (2015) (Formation Detachment) ++

+ Formation +

Judicator Battalion
····Triarch Praetorians
········7x Triarch Praetorian [8x Voidblade & Particle Caster]
····Triarch Praetorians
········6x Triarch Praetorian [5x Voidblade & Particle Caster]
····Triarch Stalkers
········Triarch Stalker [Heat Ray]

Created with BattleScribe

By taking Voidblades and PCs, and giving the Night Scythes to an Immortal squad, you avoid most of the rules conflicts Forfiter mentioned. The Judicator Battalion gives some nice, if minor, buffs to your army, and the Combined Arms Detachment lets your Immortals hold onto objectives like there's no tomorrow. Orikan in particular is a very impressive beatstick who can make up for any melee shortfall the lack of AP2 rods might bring, especially if you use the Night Scythe to bring him in at the same time as a Deep Striking Praetorian unit - he can disembark from the 'scythe directly into the Praetorians. Because they're in close already, they no longer have to worry about him denying their Jump Infantry movement, and at 1,000 points, you won't be facing much in the way of deathstars or other cheese lists that you might need to be more optimised for.

You will be buying new figures for painting or used ones?

If new i really suggest you to start with Necron Battleforce.
It have good price for value and you will use all those units:

20 warriors
[some] scarabs
5 unit of Immortals/Deathmarks (you'll probably want Immortals for start - however, deathmarks looks cool).
Ghost Ark (amazing transport / troop support).

This almost gives you very powerfull formation - Necron Decurion. You will need HQ, Tomb Blades and one additional unit, so chose one of this:

As HQ, Catacomb Command Barge is great choice. For it's price you get really big nice looking model with Overlord and Barge, that can be made as 2 different sets (Command or Anihilation). However, even in CCB you don't have to glue your overlord into Barge, so you can use him on foot (you even have base for him). It's really good to not glue this as this model is easy to switch between both possibilities.

Other named characters are fine too (especially Nemesor) - but they are finecast, harder to assemble/paint (i am telling this as beginner too)

Next, you will want Auxiliary unit to complete your Decurion. Another set of 5 immortal/deathmarks can be good choice, as you can now make 5 deathmarks and have Aux.

You can also buy more warriors and with little effort use spare parts from Immortal/deathmark set from Battleforce and convert 5 Warriors to deathmarks. And you will never get wrong with more warriors - they are very powerfull unit.

If you don't want to use Decurion, Battleforce is still good choice (as you want warriors and ark anyway!).

Preatorians need 2 sets and Stalker to use it in formation, so avoid it now. However, Lychguard (made from this set) are much easier to field (you can use it in decurion easly), so Praet/Lych set is good anyway.

Also get Tomb Blades. They are really good unit and necessary for decurion.

In my opinion, it's good to buy units that can be used as Decurion and if you will want more flexibility - you can always make CAD/Mephrit from those units. Decurion is good for beginers, as give you good advantage for start.

Thanks. Btw im getting them new

Does it work if you replace the 5 immortals with warriors?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ive been thinking about suggestions. Is this a good list?
HQ
Necron overlord with warscythe
troops
10 necron warriors with ghost ark
10 necron warriors
5 immortals with 5 gauss blasters and night scythe
elites
5 lychguard
5 lychguard
3 tomb blades
Fast attack
5 scarab swarms
heavy support
1 annhialation barge

now im not sure if the units are in the correct respective categorys (troops, elites, fast attack) but correct me if im wrong. Also, if anyone has the time, can they calculate the points of this list for me?

Tomb Blades are Fast Attack, not Elites.

You're looking at 1204 points there. It's not a great list - scytheguard are sub-optimal compared to sword-and-board, a single squad would be stronger. 5 Scarabs on their own are just going to die the moment someone looks at them unless they hide behind something scarier.

You can try basic decurion:

NECRON DECURION

Reclamation Legion
- Overlord (or CCB Overlord)
- 10xwarriors
-10xwarriors
-5ximmortals
-3xtomb blades

Deathmarks
-5xdeathmarks

Now, you can expand it easly by adding to legion:
- 5-10 Lychguard ( Swords/shields > scythes)
- Ghost arks for warriors
- Night Scythe for warriors/immortals
- Monolith (weak, but i love this model)
- More tomb blades

Instead (or in addition) of deathmarks you can get many other formations like:
- "Canoptek Harvest" - one of the strongest formations atm, it require 1 spyder, 3 wraiths and scarabs. You probably want more wraiths than 3 - they are one of the strongest formation atm

- "Judicator Battalion" (2 units of preaetorians + 1 stalker). Very strong infantry support, works well with a lot of warriors

- "Destroyer cult" (current tournament meta, but really expensive to get - you need destroyer lord and 9 destroyers, probably some heavy - they destroy your wallet first)

-"deathbringer flight" - (2-4 doom scythes) beacause who doesn't love those croissants?

Or some more.

Firstly - Get a codex maybe rules are messy, but it really looks good and gives you a good taste of Necrons cause images are really nice. I also like their fluff.

Anyway, lurk on this forum to find more help - for army building etc there are many (free) tools like Battlescribe, easy to use and even mobile app.

Here you have very useful but kinda messy source for Necron tactics:

What if I just get models I like and just stick with CAD?

CAD will force you to use a reasonably good army list, when it comes to Necrons.

Working on it

Honestly, I would use a decurion detachment with a reclamation legion and 2 judicator battalions in a 1500 point list

<Dynasty> ~10500pts
War Coven of the Coruscating Gaze ~3000pts
Thrice-Damned Plague Corps ~3250pts
Admech (TBN) ~3500pts +30k Bots and Ulator
