Sorry to bump a somewhat old thread, but I've been biting my tongue for the last few months while stuff was finalized.

However, just before Christmas the galleys went off to the printer and the early proofs are back and looking good, so Horizon Wars is a reality.

I know you guys are all miniatures wargamers, like me. So imagine how excited you would be if you were having your first ever proper miniatures game published by a proper publisher and everything.

That's how excited I am!

To quickly answer some questions:

1. Is this the same game that Manchu referred to?
Yes. I originally envisaged Horizon Wars as a three-volume game covering mechs, aircraft and other conventional elements respectively. That was for practical reasons more than anything else, but it felt good to say "The Horizon Wars Trilogy", too. But #VATMOSS reared its ugly head and electronic self-publishing was looking like bad news. Before I went to Kickstarter - where, as a virtual unknown I'd probably have sunk like a stone - I decided to pitch the game to Phil at Osprey, and he went for it. So the trilogy never properly happened and MechaWar and the other volumes got rolled into one volume as Horizon Wars.

2. How is this different from Tomorrow's War?
Obviously, the scale is different. But that's really a cosmetic thing. For gamers, the important thing that's different is that the game, unlike TW, isn't primarily a narrative-driven game. Rather, it is intended to be a balanced game with a points system right in the core mechanics. In short, I intend it to be very suitable for competitive and tournament play as well as for campaign and narrative combat.

For that reason, it is a fairly stream-lined, abstract system. Although I think it has lots of tactical nuance, playtesting has shown that it's really easy to learn the rules quickly.

3. But it's set in the same universe as Tomorrow's War?
No. The TW intellectual property belongs to Ambush Alley. I've written a completely new setting for Horizon Wars that sweeps across centuries to capture the sense of war and military technology evolving and changing over time.

4. So this is basically Osprey's version of Epic?
I really hope not. Other than being an SF game that's sort of 6mm (it works fine from 2mm up to 10mm, IMO), I hope you'll find it has very little in common with Epic in any of its incarnations.

That said, if you have Epic collections, you'll be able to play the game with your minis (although you may have to wait to be able to put your Warlord titans on the tabletop).

5. When's it out?
Well, it's on pre-order on Amazon already. The big release is at Salute on 16th April, so I'll be there running demos and chatting about the game. General release is the following week.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

R.

I could go for En Garde. A bit of swashbuckling Three Musketeers/Cyrano de Bergerac derring-do. Brilliant. Rogue Stars sounds a bit interesting too.

Momotaro wrote:They produce a range of self-contained wargames in their typical book size - 64 page softcovers, and sizeable chunks of the books are taken up with lots of lovely Osprey illustrations. Usual cost is £12 for the printed version and £5-6 for the Kindle format e-book, although Frostgrave is hardback and £15.

Is Osprey Wargames a slightly different imprint? You've got the largely self-contained OWG range in the familiar Osprey format, and then all the others with hardbacks and supplements. Frostgrave, BA, FoG, etc.

Several of them are a lot of fun though. Definitely worth a look.

Ooooh... might pass then.

Kidding. I'll be interested to give that a spin too.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

Northstar are doing a free figure with En Garde if you purchase it from them and I think it is the same price as Amazon.

The bandwidth of the hosting site is a bit limited and, seeing as I've just gone mad posting it all over the Internet, it might come and go, so I've re-posted the image to Dakka's own galleries and edited my original post. Should work consistently, now.

If your pics are wargame relevant by all means put them into the DakkaDakka gallery and link them into your Dakka postings from there.

It's good news about Horizon Wars coming out from Osprey. They have become a big resource for wargame rules as well as military historical info.

Actually I recommended the Gangland Wars guy to approach Osprey after his Kickstarter didn't fund. IDK what is happening with the game ATM.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I use flickr and I've had few problems except here. And with hotlinking from other sites. I have a feeling it's Dakka that doesn't like hotlinking.

Not that I've seen actually - it really is Flickr.

I'm going to have to start paying more attention to Osprey in 2016!

Weird War is one of the those genres that doesn't do much for me. There seems to be a lot of material available, yet I've never seen a game of any of them played.

It is a niche of a niche in a niche, so no surprise there, but it remains one of the coolest and most sandboxy anything can go themes for me.

Really looking forward to this one!

The guys at Clockwork Goblin, who are responsible for Konflikt 47, are just down the road from me. I've got a bunch of their 15mm AEWW2 stuff, and the casting quality is absolutely mint.

I too am excited about konflict 47 and will pick it up. I do hope this collaboration will also include the resin being produced into plastics. The resin is expensive and cheaper plastics would benifit the game greatly.

I like seeing Ospray hitting the fantasy/sci fi market. I think a historical wargames perspective on those tends to produce the kind of games I like.

What mechanical factors make 10mm the upper limit?

Nothing specific limits it 10mm. You could certainly use 15mm or larger if you've got the space, but the abstract nature of the rules might feel slightly out of place on larger models.

I got the proofs from Osprey today, so I thought I'd share some of the interior content to whet your appetites!

Much appreciated plastictrees!

And I'll admit - it looks very cool!

Is there a good place to go for miniatures in that scale?

Onslaught has 40k flavored 6mm and 15mm http://www.onslaughtmini.com/

Dropship Commander by Hawk Wargames is a full range of 10mm http://www.hawkwargames.com/

Reaper's CAV line is N gauge (approx 9mm) http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/CAV:StrikeOperations

Pico Armor carries the smaller end of the scales at 3mm http://www.picoarmor.com/

Ground Zero Games has a pico line at 2mm right on up. http://shop.groundzerogames.co.uk/index.php?_a=category&cat_id=7

Some of the ClearHorizon stuff might work (vehicles maybe) for the 10mm side but they are primarily 15mm http://clearhorizonminiatures.com/shop/
Dreampod 9 has interesting stuff http://store.dp9.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=69_85&product_id=1104 approx 12mm

The stuff I can recognize from the pics is Reaper's CAV and some Ground Zero Games drones. I'm not sure what the aircraft in the shot are (maybe EM4?).
