Subject: Riptide Battlesuit. What do I need to know before I put it together?
|

I don't play 40K no more. I collect slowly and model even slower. I saw the new Tau coming out soon and when I saw them all in white it just screams Macross Saga to me. Saw a Tau Battlesuit and saw the cover in white liked it, so my wife bought it for me.
So since I don't play 40K no more, I am just going to put the mini (someone laughed at me at the store when I said mini, he said "it's not small lol") what do I need to know? What should I be magnetizing? Is there any weak points in the legs I should be aware of before gluing anything together? Can I articulate it? Can I make the arms or legs movable? If so how?
Also, for collecting wise what should I get in the future? What would go with it that would look nice? I saw some potato looking dudes and don't like them. I just don't like the look of them. So what would look nice with a Tau Battlesuit?
Now if I do start gaming again, how can I play with him? What should I look into getting, beside the new Tau codex coming out next month. I play for fun. I don't play to win, or should I say need to win. Of course we all play to win, some people need to win, I am not like that. I found my old 3rd edition Tau codex. Going to read the fluff for it again. Does the 6th edition codex have more and new fluff? Won't buy it, but just want to know so this way I can expect the 7th edition Tau codex to be new and more fluff in it.
One last question. How do you play your Tau? Why do you play it like it?
Ok, one more last question. How do you play Tau so it's not cheesy but fun to play? I keep reading complaints about Tau and people roll their eyes. Since I don't know nothing about Tau, I don't know if I would make an overpowered list or not. What should I be looking for to not make it cheesy?
Thanks for reading and hoping to read your comments.

Thank you Hanshotfirst, (love the name ) so nice to worry about no weak joints or areas. Going to start putting it together soon.
So afraid of trying to paint it white. I suck at painting. Yellow and White, I have so much trouble with. Hopefully I can pull it off.

Well, if you are going to paint it white I recommend just spraying the whole thing with white primer. Trying to get large white surface areas to look good on any other basecoat is very difficult.

What other colours do you suggest if not white?

As a rule, any very light colors will be tough to make look good if done over a black basecoat(and really your main choices are black and white, unless you are specifically doing another color)
Yellow and white are particularly difficult in general, but red can also be tough if its very light in color.

I always liked this paint scheme:
The dark panels are Incubi Darkness and the lighter panels are Kabalite Green, all highlighted with Sybarite Green.

Also, if not white or black, I like to base the model with a colored primer. Army painter Angel Green for my Dark Angels for example. The closer to the color the better. It makes painting the base layer faster, easier, and cleaner. If you can't get something close in shade, get something a little darker, it will make the recesses pop better.
A small note, I have used multiple cans of several of their colors, and have not had this issue. But people do claim that sometimes they get a back spray can, so maybe use a test model before spraying something that size.

Don't worry about being cheesy, because you'll never please everyone, and many people will complain simply because they lose, the army you play, or whatever else.
The important thing is to just use your best judgement, so while a Triptide list (Three Riptides) might be really cool as I love the model, and it might be cheap, it's probably not the best to play in a friendly game of one thousand points. However, in a tournament, bring what you must to win!
Also, as someone who loves unit spam, I'd include a Riptide in a 500 point list, simply because that's how much I love the idea of both the model and the stats. My 500pt list would just be two maxed out Fire Warrior squads, and Ethereal or Fireblade, and then a Riptide. Not because I want to simply win, but because I want to play a Riptide in every game with a bunch of Fire Warriors.

Thank you everyone for the comments. They are great help.
I guess my next purchase for Tau besides the new codex would be some Fire Warriors.

Note that there are rumours of a new Fire Warrior box in the near future to go with the Codex.

At this point, I would suggest working on assembling and painting the Riptide while you wait for the new codex. New Firewarriors are supposed to be coming, along with several new suits. If you feel you -must- buy something and are remotely thinking about actually playing, I would reccomend either a box of Pathfinders, or a Broadside, as there is a Formation for the Tau that includes a Riptide and 6 Broadsides that is decidedly powerful, but not terribly broken - comparatively speaking of course.
But at least one squad of Pathfinders is almost mandatory in most Tau lists, so that would be my suggestion if you feel the 'urge to splurge' before the update drops.

After looking at the rules for it, it really doesn't look that bad. All they really gain is Tank Hunter, but you're also forced into taking a lot of specific models that might not even need that special rule, though I guess all the models are things you might take anyway. It just feels like other formations get a lot more general power, whereas the power of this comes more from the fact you would just take that stuff anyway in a lot of cases, and you get a power boost against a very specific unit type on units that already do very well against that unit type D:

I can definitely see how you read Macross/Robotech from the new stuff. I think it's really cool, myself, and the missile armed thing really clinches it for me, personally.
I wish you luck with whites. Maybe mix in some blue or red in strategic places to further cement the image.

Thanks for the luck I will need it. Yeah I will figure out where to put the blue or red in strategic places. All white will look plain, so not sure where these strategic places are yet. Tired from work so will get back to it on the weekend. So now will Google pics and see what other people have done and get more ideas.

Almost got it done, and magnetized the shield and weapons. I am on Step 22 doing Support System Assembly. I am not sure what option/s to put on.
I don't have the Tau codex. I might get it when the new one comes out next month. Not sure if I want to start a Tau army but I just love the mini in white so I bought it. Since I don't play Tau and know how or what these systems are I am not sure what to put on. Should I magnetize these or are they just for show in step 22 and 23?
Also in step 24 and 25 you have weapon system options. Do they have rules as well or just for show? If they have rules, should I magnetize these options then?
Not sure what do right now, except for trying to take off the glue and super glue off my fingers right now.
