Looking at the core set in a local shop today. $52 Canadian for either the new or old ships. Is that a fair price for retail?
Also, what's the deal with gear and pilots? Do they come with the ship packs or can I buy that stuff separate? Does it even work that way, mixing and matching upgrades from other kits or is it like each ship has its own set of possible upgrades?
Another question. The game setup says to assemble your ships, all the upgrades and such at the beginning of the game. Does this mean I have to keep popping those plastic pieces on and off or can I just leave my ships set up how I like? Is there a way to minimize the handling of the minis I guess is what I really want to know. It just seems like taking everything apart would create a lot of wear and tear. Are the pieces pretty sturdy, or do you find they wear out quickly?

Not sure on the conversion, but $40 US is the MSRP. You can find them for $26 US at a lot of the online retailers.
Every ship pack has pilots and upgrade cards for that type of ship. Some upgrades will be useful on other ships as well, so a lot of people end up buying 1-2 of every expansion even thought they may not play with that particular ship.
As far as storage, I separate my bases from the ship. The pegs are pretty flimsy and likely to be broken otherwise. There are storage cases (KR Multicase) that store the ship on the base. Assembly isn't too much of a chore before a match... you are using at most 6 ships in a 100 point game (2-4 is much more common) and it doesn't take very long.

Retail in US is 40$ so sounds about right, Amazon/miniature market you can usually get things 33% off. But support your local game stores!
If your hesitant about X-wing just get the starter, if you want to get friends to play with you, could do what i did you could get the starter, imperial aces and rebel aces and have just enough to play a 100 vs 100 point game. The starter by itself doesn't give much variety. If you get that at the 33% price its around 70$ US or ~93$ Canadian, not too bad for starting out and if like it and start buying more get them from your FLGS!
For starter set i'd say go for the force awakens set, the original doesn't have too much special except some pilots and R2D2. But its up to you!
Each ship you purchase comes with the maneuver dial, base, stand, and pilot cards you need for that ship. The upgrade cards come in all varieties; some are ship specific or faction specific but most can be used by any ship as long as that ship can equip it. Mixing and matching upgrades is a pretty core part of the game and you can only get them from certain ship sets (if your playing casually you could just print them off or ebay sellers sell singles too).
The stands for X-wing are quite sturdy and come apart easily. The first thing to show wear and tare is likely the maneuvering dials or you break something off a ship. Depending on how you transport them you could just leave them on their stands, but you would need to take them apart to switch out pilot bases.
Check out the x-wing wiki to see exactly what comes with each ship/set (scroll to bottom of home page).
http://xwing-miniatures.wikia.com/wiki/X-Wing_Miniatures_Wiki
There are tons of youtube videos on whats in each set and also watch some battle reports to see how its played. X-wing is generally has simple rules, but has a ton of options and tactics, so battle report videos are useful in learning rules and gameplay. Miniwargaming has lots of X-wing videos go check them out!

Hmmmm.. it sounds like you think there are upgrade pieces (like turrets and droids and stuff) that you have to snap together on your ships before you play. There is nothing like that. There are the plastic bases, the cardboard inserts for the bases, the plastic stems and the ships themselves. It's not very much to assemble. Most people store their collections in plastic storage trays or dedicated foam cases. Either way you are going to remove your ship models from the flight stands to store them. Indeed, they are designed to do so. As far as "assembling" your upgrades, that simply means pull out the relevant upgrade cards and place them next to your ship card on the table.

No no, I dl'd the rules from FFG and was looking at the diagrams. Looks like the bases need a bit of assembly to get the relevant inserts in there, as well as ID tabs.
I was just wondering if it was common practice to simply use the same "list" the way one might for 40k. Some people do indeed use essentially the same list and pack it all away in a tote pre-assembled. Most players I know experiement with different lists though.

The bases/ ID tabs take 30 seconds tops, if you have one that is a little too big and has t; be squeezed in. Trust me, its no issue. The tabs can also just stay in the base for transportation if you want, I only remove the pegs personally
Also, upgrades work based on cards. It's not like there's a tiny rocket or turret piece that attaches to the ship, just a card you place next to the ship to show the upgrade. Each ship comes with different ones (although each blister has a set that you always get from it, for example, the TIE/ fo will always come with juke and comms relay when it is released) When you buy a ship, the upgrades are usually intended to play to that shop's strengths, so they're useful. Occasionally you'll have fixes like the T.I.E mkII that come with a ship that doesn't really need it, but you can still do so.

A lot of people do stick with a list - more or less.
Certainly, you'll find they'll stick with the same ships - learning to be confident with how a ship maneuvers is key, so you might find that a 'list' consists of 6 TIE fighters - Howlrunner and 5 Black Squadron Pilots.
Those models can stay set up correctly with the relevant base inserts - even if you chose to experiment with different upgrade cards.
At the same time, you'll probably find you settle on a given list, and yes, most cases allow you to store the models "all-up" with tabs, inserts and models all attached.

Put my foot down. Got the Oldies!
Something has to be done about the flight stands. These pegs are atrocious! In fact I'm gonna just come right out and say it, these models and stands feel really really cheap. I'm already scared to touch them. I don't understand what FFG was thinking.
Any tips for replacing the pegs with rod?
Other than the minis feeling far too fragile... The rest of the game looks to be pretty sharp. Cardboard cut outs are very sturdy, I can make replacement turn templates out of the punch plates. The rules and all that are clean and easy to understand, especially the quick play rules, very good touch.
Overall I'm happy with the money spent, but I have some grave doubts about the minis themselves. That being said the very first thing to happen to them was the roommates awful cat. No breakeages, but then again I had the stands disassembled, so...
Also. The X-Wing... Any tips for replacing those shameful laser cannons? I'm thinking sewing pin.

YOU MONSTER!
The ships are good quality, they have great detail, the only way they could be better is if they were die-cast or something. Still no matter what a Tie wing and a X-wing gun are still extremely small, yet they rarely break.
I think one of my favorite ships is the Lamda Shuttle the detail on that thing kicks the s**t out of my larger micro machines action fleet model.

All of my X-Wings have perfectly straight laser cannons, so I have no idea what you're talking about. I gather you never had the Starship Battles pvc models in hand?
Look to Meeplemart for a cheaper core set. It's usually 36$ (Can) because 26USD will still require you paying shipping and often import fees.
I personally bought a bunch of Really Useful Boxes (from a craft store chain) and put a little square of foam in there. They all stack neatly in a bigger craft carrying case, and I can carry all of my Rebels and Scum and Villainy in one box.

I want to run my hands through it and hear all that plastic clink- but never could for fear that they would snap!
Yet... am I really doing too much to guard my X-wing ships? Or like the 'microwave charge' feature of the iphone, am I being tantalized into epic failure? What gets me are the assembled flight stands. I've played BFG, and those things snap off in a stiff breeze!
Exalt either way.
Much fear I sense in me.

Most of the stuff that I've seen broken have been the tiny turrets on some of the bigger ships, often snapping off completely. Also, X-Wing guns tend to get bent pretty easily. It seems that TIEs are virtually indestructible because of the design, no protruding cannons and such.
I normally use a tackle box tray lined with some 1" foam (holes cut in to put the peg in so they don't slide) for small ships.

If you want the pegs to come on and off easily, might I suggest a tiny drop of lubricant, such as jig-a-loo (do not mistkae this for "invite a jugalo", totally different thing)? I've never had pegs being too tight. Some too loose, yes, but never the other way around.
Seriously, though, I keep the pegs all in one baggy, the bases in another baggy and the ship tokens in yet another baggy. My carry case looks like your regular meth dealer's heaven, but everything is fine.

I agree they are tough but dropping something on them can break the peg.
Saw the starter box get dropped on an X-wing... it was not pretty.
I figure if I had to get the half-peg out of the model I would take a fine hobby dril (pin vice)l, drill a hole and the magic part is to find a small enough screw to fit in the hole.
I think you would need to find a "#3" screw or smaller, if you are 40+ like me, jeweler's visor is recommended.
<edit> Good alternative fix/upgrade here: http://wargt.blogspot.ca/2014/04/my-new-found-love-xwing.html
I strongly suggest if you are seriously considering the game, two starter packs are a good way to go with all the extra game needed stuff.

Anyway, this could go on forever but these are some essentials to it.

Meth dealer... fan of a FFG game... it can be hard to tell based on the amount of baggies that come with an FFG product.
I keep 6 sets of the small stands and pegs (plus a few extra pegs) and two sets of the large stands and pegs in my X-Wing Go bag... any game that requires more than that requires more planning. (Epic anyone?)
I use the for mentioned Plano 3600 series cases. I may have to upgrade to some of the 3700 line... they have double height cases for things like the Hounds Tooth and Shuttles that don't quite fit in the standard height 3600 cases.

Um... How many do I need? Damn!
Anyways, I think if I get some magnets and some rod I can replace those pegs no problem. Just glue a magnet to the ships peg holder, and bam, done.
Also a question about ships. I get why the Falcon is there, its a pretty tough ship. Lots of eyeballs get vaped by the Falcon in the movies. The Lambda Shuttle? Why is this one in the game? It literally appears for 20 minutes does nothing except fly casual. And even weirder, it seems like this is a good ship and I see lots of people talking about it like its awesome. Doesn't this seem strange to anyone else, or is there like a comic or something where the Lambda actually does something?

Why is it in the game? Because it's an iconic Star Wars ship.
The Lambda-class shuttle is the most efficient ship in the game when it comes to point cost compared to hull/shield. For 21 points, you get a ship with a three dice attack that has a combined 10 hull and shield, with the drawback of having a really poor dial and low agility (it does have the Stop maneuver, which is powerful). It can also take some good upgrades, namely the Cannon and Systems Upgrade. People take it for the reasons above and also because they can use it ferry a valuable crew member like Darth Vader or Emperor Palpatine (much like the movie). The low cost, high health of the ship make it an attractive platform for these expensive and powerful cards to fly around in (it's also one of two ships available in standard play that the Emperor can be equipped to, the other being the more expensive VT-49 Decimator).

@BrianDavion,
You will want ships from all three factions. There are upgrade cards in each expansion that fit multiple ships. An old example: Push the Limit (Receive a Stress Token, perform another action that you haven't already performed this turn) was originally available in the A-Wing expansion. MANY Imperial players bought 3 A-Wings in order to use that card with their TIE Interceptors. It just happens.
Short Summry of the Factions:
Imperials: Fast Nimble Fighters in squadrons, supported with either High Pilot Skill (and hard to kill) aces or heavy hitting but slow ships
Rebels: Mid Toughness ships with supportive benefits
Scum: Mid Toughness ships with tricks.
Most people have a favorite faction, but collect and play all three.
