No, I would imagine you're seeing 'OT' models. Organized Tournament prize ships and blind boosters.

The game is verymuch alive and well.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just did a search for attack wing OP (Organized Play I guess?) and yeah, all those ships were prize ships, limited non-retailing releases for tournament play, prizes or blind booster ships.

There is a large and thriving secondary market for this game. It's not about people saying "I hate this game! It sucks!" and dumping their collections on eBay (although you do see that every once in a while). It's more that it's such a popular and fun game that people are trying to cash in on that popularity. There are still ships going for $50+, and GenCon Khan (if you can find him) easily goes for premium prices as well.

This is a good time to be getting into STAW. The Borg nerf finally reigned them into manageable levels, the selection of ships has never been better, and you don't need certain prize ships and cards to be competitive (like you did when the game first came out). While the rules can sometimes be a mess, and the Wizkids rules "team" (can one guy really be called a team? ) makes some questionable rulings, it's still a fun game to play.

The next round of Organized Play events is about to kick off. These are official Wizkids events with scenarios, participation prizes, and prize ships. The next OP Story Arc is the Temporal Cold War from the Enterprise NX-01 and Xindi race. After that, there are several "Episodic" OP events. These are based on events from the TV series and movies. The new ships coming out in the next five release waves may not be highly recognizable, but they promise some unique buffs to each fleet that will make you not regret picking them up.

Star Trek is far from dead.

There usually are no limits to the number of OP kits a store can buy. So unfortunately there are some stores that would rather put their kits up on ebay instead of running events. There are also some stores that will sell kits directly to players/staff and they put them up. This has been going on since STAW started. Back when the Stargazer came out there was a guy selling 12 of them, so some how he got himself 4 whole kits and cashed in. In some respects its bad, because people think they can get insane prices for ships. There are still a few people that think they can get $60 for a Sutherland or $80 for a Ch'Tang. Like all of the prize ships they are nice to have, but there is nothing in any of them worth more than $20-25. Personally I don't think $10 above retail is terrible, but that is a call everyone has to make for themselves.

The FLGS that I play at now had an event a few weeks ago that was really cool: The Borg have smashed the Alpha quadrant. Everyone is fighting for themselves.

The way it worked we all got a Hideki fighter resource for free, The started selling the blinds by the brick, and all of the old prize ships were on the table. You had to destroy the borg ship and tractor the prize ship off the board to get first pick, but everyone walked away with an OP prize. It was fun.

That kind of event is great. Stores can sell old prizes and blinds, but the have to check their WK agreement to see how long they have to wait after the initial event to sell stuff. Something in the back of my mind is telling me 180 days, but their is a lot of stuff back there.

So stores can OPENLY sell this stuff? I did not know that.

I am planning one myself as the FLGS I attend is letting me inventory the backdated stuff. I am very excited to see what I find. (a Sutherland and a Stargazer mayhaps?)

Yeah they can sell it, but you do have to check the WK product agreement. Sometimes it is on the WK site but I believe it is in writing somewherewith the order. Stores do have to be ccareful to follow the agreement or they or their distributor can loose their distribution rights if they violate. Back in the Dominion War a Canadian store got caught selling whole OP2 kits on eBay and WK yanked their distributors rights. So for a couple moths there was a whole section of Canada couldn't get kits. It lasted 2-3 months. The stores either didn't have events or had to try and go through Alliance. Violations can also be reported via the WK site.

Check out the "News Updates" on the left hand side. Currently there is one there for the War of Light (Heroclix). Now I believe they only put these up when they release them early. My TO said something about a standard clause that they can be sold 160 or 180 days after the event is over, but the rep from the distributor will know for sure. In any case, they are allowed to use them as prizes for other events or in case of the blinds use those as entry for other events. The big deal is WK doesn't want them being sold before hand and nobody comes to events.

If something is Out of Production you'll see OOP.

Ok I figured I'd put this here, FLGS had a bunch of OP packs that we haven't been able to play, I was given the option either our TO holds events to use them up or buy them, otherwise they would stop getting them for us. so I bought 3 older ones and put tthem up on ebay. The Arena went very fast. If you have any interest in Peek Performance or RIF3 ships let me know. I'll share the link, selling them very cheap.

In the end I think I will have to start doing the events, I'm tired of waiting for the current TO to do stuff. We still haven't finished Q continium month 2-3, and we have Year of Hell and Year of terror to do. all sitting at the store gathering dust.

It's great that you are stepping up to run events! As someone that used to run events for Warmachine all the time, I can tell you that you get burned out.

It takes a lot to plan, organize, and run events, especially if you are running two or more a month. Wizkids does a great job with the OP kit, but you still need to make copies of the rules/fleet building sheets, coordinate and de-conflict schedules at the LGS, update the Wizkids website, report the results (do they report? I've never ran a Wizkids event, but for Privateer Press I had to report the results). Then there is the social media aspect (posting to Facebook) and advertisement to promote the OP. Then keeping up with all the rules and errata. Finally, there is the event itself: getting there early, setting everything up, running the event, and finally cleaning it all up.

It doesn't sound like much, but do it a couple times a month, for 2-3 months, and it takes it's toll.

I went over to the store, turns out they only have OP kits from Dominion war Month 1-4. I am thinking of doing some sort of special event instead of a normal OP event.

As far as the whole scheduling and organizing, I have been doing it for others games (X-wing, our Attack Wing group, RPGs) for a while, since I usually host at my place. I am not wanting to get too crazy and run four events a month, I want to keep it small enough that I can run it all without sacrificing too much of my extra time.

Aye, tbh I'm very thankful for stores that sell OP kits, occasionally a player will sell their stuff, but without the stores doing that I would have zero chance of getting any of the figures, and some of them have been awesome.

Just picked up Jewel and She-Hulk last week.

I don't have a problem with stores selling their kits, I just don't want anyone loosing their distribution rights. That said I wish WK would just make it possible for everyone to but OP kits. It would be great if the prize ships were available for purchase for the month of the event off the WK site. Making them retail after the event wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Aye, I get that, but I have a feeling Wizkids aren't heavily enforcing it.. I can think of three EU stores off the top of my head constantly selling OP kits and figures and have been for a long time, one in particular I got OP stuff from three years ago, and just got more off them this week.

Tbh I am more surprised Wizkids doesn't sell stuff like that from an online source, they must be aware their are collectors out there who don't have access to the OP system due to location.

The way I hear it is that the OP stuff can be sold as soon as the store gets it as long as no one complains.

I also heard that the OP kits are about half the price of what we originally thought... $24 US for the prize kits and $80 US for the Blind packs... Meaning that Blinds are bad for stores, while OPs are a great deal.

Anyone know how to get a distributor's license?

I'm not sure if it is still the case, but during the Dominion War stores had to order at least 6 of each retail ship in order to be able to purchase the OP kits. That may have changed. But yeah, the OP kits are way cheaper than people online want us to believe. It ticks me off when I see people trying to sell bling bricks for $150 +, knowing it only cost $80some in the first place. That was for RiF and Coll blinds, who knows what folks will try to get for TCW.

I think asking for $100 to $120 for a whole brick is fair, as I have seen several of the local stores do here.

I just want to find out why my FLGS is being charged 45 for a kit...

Yes, you require a buisness tax ID number or similar legal means to be considered a buisness. I had looked into this once when the only option for me other local guys was going to a disreputable store. It is a costly means to get stuff from Allaince and other distribiitors. Lucky for use a local group who did tournaments opened a new store.
