On paper these guys seem pretty good, basically a slightly more expensive sm veteran with a host of special rules including ignore cover and their save is invulnerable. Never saw them in action myself though and they don't seem popular, so what gives? A ignore cover multi melta, melta gun and combi grav 5 man squad comes in at 155 pts which seems a reasonable deal considering their special rules. I guess for raw firepower they don't match up to some other SM units likes bikes or sky hammer Devs, but on the flip side, they laugh off grav and one shot high ap weapons whilst ignoring tricks like jink or cover. Weight of fire will kill them fine though just like a normal marine but deep striking melta squads never do have a long life span.

Anything I'm missing here and how do they rate in the marine hierarchy of units?

You're not missing anything - they're a good unit. I use them all the time, and have no idea why they're not more popular.

They use to be more expensive and fought for the Elite slot. Now they are more affordable and can be allies if you don't have the slot to space. Their only weakness is no turn 1 deep striking outdide of a very specific scenario.

They were massively overpriced in pervious codexes, so not in a lot of vet’s collections. We tend to play what we own. As their role can also be filled by pod sternguard, you see that more often.

They are stupidly expensive to purchase, and only available in finecast. This turns a lot of people off.

Some people don’t care for their fluff/aesthetics.

They don’t have chapter tactics, and don’t fit into formations.

But as a unit, they are quite nice. I put together some counts-as which I’ll get around to painting one of these days. Mechanically I like them a lot.

Saying they don't fit in formations is misinformation. They have their own codex. Well, codex-in-name-only.

I try very hard to forget that book. I find it fairly offensive and an embodiment of what's wrong with GW. Blatant cash grab. One unit codexes should not exist. Should have just been an issue of WD, or at worst a $10 DLC dataslate.

But you are correct. All my advice and commentary on the LotD refer to them being taken as part of the SM codex.

Nope, that one makes you want to take heavy weapons.

So? They're durable enough to take it, and they're supposed to be a suicide unit anyway.

Do they have any good relics in their codex?

I could see them working out with a drop pod-centric force. Null deployment or just playing hard-to-catch with DS.

The only relic they have gives the unit FNP and whenever an enemy unit fails a Fear, Pinning or Morale check within 12” of the bearer, one randomly determined model in that unit is immediately removed as a casualty with no saves of any kind allowed

hi, if the rules exist you might as well use them though.
Not like any of us bought that. lets be honest-most of us don't "own" the rules to like 70% of what we use.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

LotD are good combined with Vulkan cus you get that MC melta weapons rule that does not specifically apply to models with chapter tactics

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

Indeed. Always wanted to build a "Rescue Vulcan" list, with minimal Salamanders on a Skyshield and maximum LotD dropping in starting turn 2.

I did not know that about Vulkan's melta rule. Nice.

I honestly believe that if you want to use LotD, you should just use Salamander Tactics as it still pertains to fluff while being competative enough

I guess with grav totting bikes, command squads, pod cents and Battle companies, it can be hard to get a look in if you don't fall into any of the above.

If Lotd were say a CSM/Guard/Grey Knights etc unit, would you see much more of them in those lists?

No.

I've used them a few times as apoc allies for my CSM and found them pretty fun. They certainly fit the bill of daemonic uber-marine better than any of the actual csm models.
