So after quite some time of having my own color scheme for my tau, I was thinking of repainting them to be a bit more unique. At the moment, they are grey and orange, no specific caste or formation.

But I was thinking about whether or not there are renegade tau, besides the Farsight Enclave. I've seen whole kroot armies, and other variations, but no true renegade army for tau. I've done a bit or research too, and can't find any fluff to support it. Please reply with any information you may have on renegade tau, or some color scheme that i can do to make them worn out or war-torn in some way. I'd prefer no chaos integration since I did find that the tau are more or less oblivious to the gods.

Oh damn, that gives me a good idea to do for tau, but my question is, is there any 40k lore for em/ special cases. Otherwise thanks

I'm sure there are renegade Tau somewhere, I wouldn't worry about whether or not there's any examples in the lore. The 40k universe is intentionally left vague so you can do what you'd like in terms of creating your own fluff and armies.

Well, the fact that Farsight exists shows it to be possible for some Tau factions to break free of the Greater Good, so just write your own fluff.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Fluff-wise, I don't have a problem with 'rebellious' Tau, in the sense of non-standard appearance and tactics, so long as they're still working for the Greater Good and so are grudgingly tolerated by traditionalist Tau. But other than Farsight, I'm not aware of any official GW canon along those lines.

One option is that a 'normal' Tau army are on some long-term mission far from supplies and so have been forced to compromise with whatever's available or can be repaired locally.

Camouflage would be another possible fluff option - e.g. they're fighting in some huge urban mega-city where their normal tidy appearance makes them stand out too much, so they repaint themselves to look like Chappie the robot as in the above pic.
