Alright I think part of what I'm asking has been covered but am after some clarification.
I am looking at getting into AoS (previously only played 40k) and am wondering if now is a good time? I know it's all hyped at the moment but it seems to still be in a big transition period. I'm wondering if I start building an army now am I going to get screwed down the track due to rule changes?
The army I'm looking at doing is vamps/bones but will probably be throwing in some dragons and stuff (my partner wants to paint fantasy stuff but not wanting to play) I like how AoS hasn't got any set structure in what you can field but advantages for synergy. Now in saying that I am still tempted to get the starter box to learn with as it seems to have good value and probably try and sell off the models I don't like down the track, is that a bad idea?
Also I've read of converting the chaos into barbarians? Any how to's or rules for them?
Thanks heaps everyone, trying to get my head around this and any help greatly appreciated :-)

Since your flag says Australia my first question would be is there a local scene for it?

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

The starter box is great value. I don't think you're going to get screwed down the road at all. Any units that have rules now will always have those rules. It's not like other editions where army books change what you want to use every edition. Undead and dragons sounds cool.

I would certainly get the starter set as you can trade/sell the models for what you want, and its a great value in the models it has.
I run Undead as well( along with 3 other armies) and just recently ran my Nagash list against a Glottkin/Nurgle list.It did pretty well but we weren't able to finish it.Overall though I would say for Undead ,if you go summoning like I do with mine you really need to have some hard hitters to summon, like Terrorghiests,Vargulfs or maybe some of the TK big stuff.
If you are going for large blobs of skellies and or zombies try one of the formations for the synergy bonuses.
Also if you are gonna play without a comp system I recommend the GW Battleplans(scenarios) as they have balancing factors and some fun victory conditions. They are much better than just slamming into each other in the middle of the board

In that case lets see about your actual questions.
I doubt you'll get screwed over by rules changes any time soon, the current rules for a lot of stuff just seem to be a holdover until they get properly addressed (might take a while), but I daresay that means any upcoming rules changes should* be welcome.
From what I understand if you have no interest in the actual models in the starter set there isn't really any reason to get it, the rest can be found in the other printed books or is free online.
Out of curiosity what part of Australia are you in that is big on AoS right now?
*with GW this is never a guarantee

I'm in Canberra so "big" might not be correct wording but my local gw is certainly giving it's best. The manager is a champ and unlike any gw I've been in before.
I do like the chaos models but the sigmarites are a bit meh to me.
Now battalions, vampire or tomb better value? Again I think I have preference for the tombs but if the vampire battalion is notably better...
Cheers everyone

Yeah I know, that's the store I'm talking about :-) I'm yet to head to jolt but looks pretty good. I'm pretty FB illiterate but have joined just for the gaming community, I'll look the group up :-) Automatically Appended Next Post: Alright quick follow up question or 3,
1. Would a tomb battalion and zombie dragon with vampire lord be a decent starting point (and how should I assemble)
2. Speaking of assembling are they easy enough to magnetise?
3. Is the vampire lord easy to put on and off?
Cheers
