Some of you may have noticed models from this company in another thread. Up until this point, you could only buy via Facebook, but they now have their own online store at:-
http://unreleasedminiatures.com/
They're opening with a 25% discount on Goblins too!

Kinda spendy. 3 goblins for £15.75 seems high.

"Seems" my ass, even with the 25% discount these are more expensive then GW's Hobbit miniatures. You know, the range that's so overpriced even long-time collectors have barely touched it.
I'll say this for GW though, at least they took out a license like a decent company. I don't know where these guys get off charging extra for leeching off of someone else's work.

Agreed. These prices are so mad, I'm surprised they survived long enough to open a proper webshop.
Also, overall the sculpting is not bad, but some of those poses are a bit weird, and I'm sure I saw that dwarf pony somewhere before.

I think people snapped them up originally on the basis that everyone thought they'd have been nailed by a C &D by now, and they were available through facebook only. Now they've made the transition to 'standard webshop', they may find the stock harder to shift at the current price.
Having said that, a lot of LOTR models are becoming rarer and more expensive in the face of greater and greater demand. I know there's at least one chap on ebay who's clearly doing recasts of more popular metal models, and even then, many heroes can reach equivalent prices. Eomer, Marshal of the Riddermark hits £40 on ebay, Dalamyr can easily go for twenty, Gothmog (death variant) whacks past the £20 mark and so forth.
Meanwhile, if you want Knights of Dol Amroth, Feral Uruk-Hai, or Corsair Arbalesters, their current prices make this chap seem reasonable.

I can't even tell if the miniatures are any good, since on my phone the 'enlarged' picture popup is even smaller than the already too-small-to-make-out-detail main picture... And whatever site software they're using doesn't seem to allow zooming...

I think "leeching" is a bit harsh, but that's subjective. In any case, no one except a GW of one of the big toy companies can afford a licence to this franchise, anyway. IMO these guys are just a part time, garage buisness that's make some figures that GW should have made but couldn't be bothered to.
Ketara wrote:Now they've made the transition to 'standard webshop', they may find the stock harder to shift at the current price.
I was quite taken with their "Pirate Thugs from the Far South" to use as the Corsair Radiers that GW included in the Harad and Umbar list but never made miniatures for. Looking at them now, though, at over $32US for three I'm not sure if I want to spend over $130US to get a 12 man warband.
Meanwhile, if you want Knights of Dol Amroth, Feral Uruk-Hai, or Corsair Arbalesters, their current prices make this chap seem reasonable.
Yeah. Not sure about the Dol Amroth foot knights, but the Feral Uruk-hai and Corsair Arbalesters seem to be going for around $50US per blister these days.

I have Unreleased's Corsair Reaver 3-pack analogs and they are fantastic sculpts and casts. Highly recommended if you have a Corsair army and want those finishing touches on it.

This sends a such a bunch of little swirling threads of 'wrongness' through my head that I don't know if I can start to articulate it. At the least, it's not doing much to mitigate my growing paranoia about licensed movie minis and games being a bit of a con. Especially when they're based on relatively generic (even historic) concepts, and when the ropey knockoffs start to seem almost as much of a con. Speaking as someone quite fond of some ropey knockoffs.
Put it this way: what is a Dalamyr or a feral uruk-hai, where did they come from, and why would you want them that badly?

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?
|
With some models, it's the in-game use that makes them popular and thus expensive. Things like the Feral Uruks, Arbalesters or Mahud Kings are both very good on the tabletop and OOP, so if you want them for a tournament army, you have to fork out the cash.
Others simply had rather short production runs or were replaced with Finecast or just removed from sale (after the arrival of Finecast, it basically went down to 1 version, the finecast one, of any particular hero being available. So if you didn't get that version in metal when it was out. again you're going to have to pay a lot if you really, really want it).

Tell me about it! I'm not a competative or tournament player, but this year I'm trying to fill the gaps in my LOTR collection, and I had none of those miniatures. I managed to track down a dozen Ferals, a dozen Arbalesters and a Mahud King to add to my forces. It was a financially painful experience.

There's a separate crowd interested in each of those. Dalamyr is an OOP character model. Unlike say, the Fellowship, there weren't that many made. A lot of LOTR players are actually collectors, the types who want 1 of every model, and so Dalamyr, being uncommon, commands a fairly high price.
Feral Uruk-Hai on the other hand, are competitive to use in game but OOP. With the tournament scene for LOTR blossoming, there are many more people who want to build them into their army lists than there are copies available for purchase. The result? Prices increase.
In other words in both cases, demand>supply.

Considering the hundreds of miniatures for LOTR that are still in print and the fact that the license is about to enter it's fifteenth year, this isn't so bad. And while I'd like GW to keep _everything_ in print, it's just not fiscally responsible for a game that is no longer a primary/core game. And don't forget, many LOTR models available from GW are metal - which they haven't actively cast in over three years. The game has been phenomenally well supported over the years considering the volume of releases and books it's had plus hundreds of WD articles. Every aspect of the films has been covered (with multiple iterations of scenarios) and every aspect of the books and the appendices as well... there's really not much more to do.

Much as I wish they did keep everything in production, and even revised old products or produced new ones, there's a lot of truth in what Judgedog sais. People who game mostly 40K or WFB have a somewhat skewed view of games companies. GW in a real anomoly in keeping those two games in production as long as they have. The only other miniature game from the 80s I can think of that's still in print and even still producing new material is BattleTech, which is still a much smaller franchise than Warhammer.

They've just made an armoured Faramir on foot with shield. Not sure there was much a demand for that (there's a metal version it was easy to glue a shield on), but it's a nice enough sculpt.
There's also a Mounted Citadel Guard who looks like he's been made to hold a standard (on the left).

The company has released more new miniatures. Since this is now regular, I've shuffled it over to the N&R forum here:-
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/672413.page
They've also decreased prices on things like the Corsairs, so it's slightly more reasonable now. £15 for three models is still a bit steep, but much easier to swallow.

I would probably buy a pile of those if they weren't the same price or more than the officially licenced GW ones. Even with the reduction and without postage, they cost more than models direct from GW here.

Of course, they are for the most part miniatures that GW never made.
I could live with the chartacter prices, since you only need one of them. I'd love to pick up a dozen or so of the Pirate Thugs, but the cost for a full warband is a bit daunting.

A pack of three reavers were definitely worth it for my modest Corsair warband (500 points - 24 man box, Dalmyr, Captain, Bosun, 8 Arbalesters, 3 Reavers)
Workin' my budget to get these releases. I definitely want Beregond mounted and Citadel Guard Archers mounted (actually don't mind the price for these guys since you get two). 75% on Gil-Galad mounted and 50/50 on foot Faramir.
