How does it hold up in the current meta?
Has it always been viable throughout 40k history?
What's a quick exemple of a mech list?
and of crouse, are there different playstyles with it then the good ol sit ur big guns back n ahve them shoot and move up your chimera troops to grab stuff?
are the walkers any sort of useful? I really like their models.
Thanks in advance dakka.
I'm confused as hell trying to pick an army and seems like my best bet would be to try to thin out my list of armies I like. Hence all the questions all the time.

Doesn't hold up at all.
It was ok in 5th, after the new codex and some parts of 6th. I was told they were crap in 3ed and 4th.
The walkers are bad, and there isn't a different way to play them. Maybe if you count FW and spaming artilery carriges and tons of ally, and as few as possible of actual IG units.

Damn, that's a shame, but I wasn't expecting much from the ol guards. Xenos seem to put reg humans to shame.

It was actually impossible to do under the 3rd edition Codex, without using the Armageddon Steel Legion rules in Codex: Armageddon.

Mech isn't all bad. I've done okay lately with mech. It is not a powerhouse by any means. I've consistently been bringing down anyone who isn't the new necron, eldar, Sm formations...
I regularly play against Tau, Gk, other am, knights, iron hands, nids, orks, white scars.... And the occasional necron and eldar.
Inquisition allies really bolster these guys. Something to look into. If it isn't necron or later I usually do well.
As far as an example... Start with a company command squad in a chimera, and veterans in Chimeras. I lose the out with low as guns.
Next I add in artillery such as the manticore. D3 str 10 ap4 large blasts a turn barrage, ordnance. This thing mulches most things up.
Then I like a little maneuverability added, so I'll bring in a vendetta or two and put a company command squad with all melta in it (this unit always blows the hell out of things.) Add in a psychic inquisitor for prescience.
I like walkers too although they usually under perform. But they are not bad... Just for the same price eldar get a similar platform that puts it over twice as many shots from a similar gun.
I like to use plasma equipped armored walkers. Not because they at good but because they are fun
Lots of people swear by the wyvern as well. I don't have one in my army yet.
Another route to go is the leman Russ tanks. These tanks provide some nice guns and good durability. Eldar chew these up though. But to moSt players still struggle with them a bit.
