Hi all, not sure if anyone here plays HeroClix and can give me a few pointers and basics on building a team and tactics with certain kinds of heroes and villains. I am extremely new and haven't really read much of the rules. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't played Heroclix before, but I have seen some videos on Youtube covering it. I have held off that bug for a while, but I may have to give in once Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comes out. I think it is some time soon.

I think the answer depends on what kind of Clix you want to play. There are two WILDLY different answers.
The wife and I play competitive Clix, and if you want to play at a high level, the harsh reality is that you will spend a LOT of money buying "meta" pieces, and 95% of Clix models will be absolutely worthless. It is a skill based, and rewarding way to play, but not always the most fun, if I am being honest.
If you are playing casually, anything goes. Build around favorite characters, teams, whatever you like. In general look for characters with Probability Control, Outwit, and Perplex to make teams slightly more competitive.

Aye, have to agree. Playing for tournie level means looking for a particular group of figures who are dominating the meta, you see plenty of discussion about the worth of new heroes on HCrealms and some other locals out there on the web, or the best combos.
Although I have read some, and have a passing interest in which characters are the be all of the current game, I generally play casually with my sons, and we just basically play 'what if' battles, or classic Avengers vs Master of Evil, Hydra vs Shield, Jokers crew vs Bat family etc.. just set a points limit and go for it. You will find occasional characters who will dominate a game due to their combination of powers, points etc, but in all during most of the games we have played, its been very rare to see a wash out for a winning side, typically both sides will loose half its team in a good win.

And honestly, I think that is where the game shines.
Being candid... its a terribly designed and balanced game. If hardcore miniature wargamers took the time to look at it they would find a game that makes 40k look downright excellent in comparison.
Just one small example... their designers will sometimes, one day apart, give utterly conflicting errata for how a rule works. Or will arbitrarily change swathes of the game, while leaving broken characters to win world-tier tournaments, and thousands of dollars in cash prizes.
Its an awful, but incredibly fun game, that in order to shine, needs a group of friends, a theme, and a desire to tell a super-hero narrative... not play out a balanced game.
And I sincerely say this with love, even after spending much of this year travelling for major tournaments, and a few times placing in the Top-8.

I may RUN the occasional OP event, but I will always prefer house rules and casual play over competitive, no matter how good/bad I am.

Heroclix is one of those games that isn't so cut and dry with an answer like this.
The simple answer is, it really depends on what sort of game your looking for. If you intend to just play it casually? Any pieces work. Play whatever characters you like. In todays age of Clix, they've made most characters useful.
If you intend to play competitive, then do some major research on what are considered the 'power pieces' and work around those. Every set has a piece that people seem to deem as busted (usually figures in the Prime rarity, aka green ring bases) and sometimes Chase rares.
I play only casually these days, with occasional tournaments here and there locally. I play mostly X-Men figures when playing for fun, and usually just my Nimrod figure when in tournaments (he's a bulldozer that most people don't seem to prepare for).
