I am trying to find a game, as the title says.
I am in love with some of the minis to paint with infinity, but I am trying to find a good system and ruleset. My friend says that imperial assault and warmachine are good choices.
Given the choice of IA or infinity.
What are the models like?
Ruleset?
Challenge and tactics?
I am intersted mostly in a 2 player skirmish game.
If anyone has any advice on the topic please let me know, I am stuck between a rock and a hard place lol

This thread discusses some of infinity's merits against imperial assault. There's not much more to say on the matter as they are very different games.

Warmachine is much more of a classic tabletop wargame and tends to evolve past skirmish scale quite quickly.
You mention that it's mainly for you and a friend to play, if it's just the two of you or a small group playing I wouldn't recommend it.
The pair of you will soon find yourselves playing the same game over and over or in an arms race with one another trying to out do or surprise each other with new, fresh or tricksy lists which soon becomes costly/model heavy.
It works far better within a healthy gaming community or at tournaments
Infinity on the other hand can be varied massively with scenarios, interesting terrain setups and the addition of a model every now and again.
Given what i can glean from your 5 posts, and the situation I imagine you in, I'd go with infinity given the choice of the 3.

If you're at all interested in painting, and like Infinity minis aesthetically, then Infinity is the only choice! There are some people who would take models they didn't like for the sake of a great game, but with Infinity you have both great minis and great rules, and what's more, generic sci-fi skirmish games are ten a penny all over the internet, many even completely free! So if you find yourself enjoying painting the Infinity minis but for whatever reason don't get on with the rules (I don't, personally. They're fine from a technical perspective, just a little too fiddly for me) then you've got a ton of other options, from adapting something like Necromunda or even a fantasy skirmish system like A Song of Blades and Heroes right up to just using the minis in place of [insert faction here] in [insert game here] with no modifications.

Infinity has been around 10 years now. Star Wars games seem to come and go. IIRC, there was a Star Wars miniatures game in the '90's, and then WoTC had one in the '00s. Now FFG has one in the '10s. Who knows how long it will last?
I can say that Infinity is great fun. Download the rules, and the quickstarter rules Here. You can use the online Army Builder too. Set up a table with what terrain you have or can improvise; proxy some minis, and play through a few games using the quickstarter rules. If you like it, then get the minis, and anything else you may want... terrain probably.

There is a free download of basic rules for Infinity, and the v1.1 rulebook for free as well. The current rules are v2.0, I think (not 100% sure about that, TBH.)
http://infinitythegame.com/archive.php
There is a free download for basic Imperial Assault rules here.
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/star-wars-imperial-assault/
Download those and you can evaluate them at your leisure, maybe play a couple of games with proxy figures. The Imperial Assault is going to be more easily playable straight out of the box, but has less complication in terms of different weapon and unit types, and so on.
In terms of the figures, the Infinity figures are much more expensive than the Star Wars Imperial Assault, but there is more variety and detail.
There are of course many other SF figure lines on the market, including the new Gate of Antares models, the Maelstrom's Edge stuff due in a couple of months, and others such as the old AT43 figures, etc etc.

Is it, indeed? Well, you can't say fairer than that.
I was thinking that perhaps the new Micro Machines Star Wars play sets could be used for some kind of SF skirmish, but I think there may be too few basic infantry figures in them to make it work.

Warzone Resurection. The rules are free to download and the models look fantastic. I highly recommend it.

I've tried Warzone, and got a starter and boss.
As said, it's free to start, it has a fair range of models, and seems to be a good skirmish game.
From what I have seen of it, each side has a special rule (like Chapter Tactics for SMs), defining how the army plays. You might want to branch out a bit to get more variety out of your games. Check the rulebook though, as it lists all but 1 army (Imperials), which is also free to download.

Infinity is a preety solid game, even if it gets a bit crazy with the special rules. Also, terrain is a must.
Imperial Assault is more of an out of the box ready to play style game. I would consider it more of a boardgame with wargaming elements.
Warmachine is not a great skirmish game and neither is 40K.
You might also want to check out, Clash on the Fringe, Stargrunt II, Rogue Planet or Tomorrow's War/Force-on-Force using Ground Zero Games 15mm sci-fi figs. Pretty cheap, easy to paint, and takes up very little space.
However, your mileage may vary. I recommend folks just get and paint models they like and then using rules from the Free Wargames Wikia too.

Infinity isn't any crazier than Warmachine or Malifaux (or even 40k) as far as special rules go.
The difference is that Infinity is up front about all of the special rules that exist and puts them all in the same place, rather than dividing them up between the cards for the models or the books for each faction.

Yeah, okay it might not be crazier. However, I would argue all of those rules have a lot of crazy special rules.
Special Rules bloat is the trend right now.

I think it's one of the ways some new(ish) games try to imitate GW and wind their tendrils into gamers. A thousand little speed bumps get translated as 'tactics' and 'character'. Seems to work, tho.
Been meaning to download Rogue Planet meself, for a while.

Minis are minis, they'll match up. WR is actually more of a skirmish game compared to second edition which was aiming a bit for 40k level fights. Also the 2nd edition models will be much older sculpts and out of proportion with the rest if you end up liking it.

You are trying to compare apples and oranges. Infinity is a tabletop miniature skirmish gamer; Imperial Assault is a dungeon crawl board game (a Star Wars retheme of Descent). Which type of game are you looking for?
|
Order of the Ebon Chalice, 2,624pts
Officio Assassinorum, 570pts
Hive Fleet Viracocha, 3,673pts
562pts |

There are skirmish rules in IA, so he's correct.
