I am putting together a Raven Guard Army for 40k. An assualt/scout styled (fluffy) army. However, I wanted to add some air support.

Should I get a Fire Raptor or Storm Eagle?

Should I get 1 of each? or 2 of one type? Or is 1 enough?

Suggestions greatly appreciated!

Fire Raptors are amazeballs. Get two: they look great, and have some pretty good anti-infantry guns. Just make sure the rest of your list has some tank-popping abilities.

Depends on what you play. I would go for a Fire Raptor. No transport capacity, but tons of firepower and can fire at different targets.

Also, unless you bring certain units, I believe you can only field 1 unless you're playing 30k.

Ah, good. Fire Raptor seems better choice for my 50% assualt & 50% scout army... need some heavy firepower that is Raven Guard fluffy....

I'm not sold on flyers as transports in any form. Fire Raptor, hands down. But as pointed out, you can only have the one without taking a Techmarine (Master of the Forge equivalent via House Rules), and I don't think that would fit into most Raven Guard lists as an HQ choice..

It largely depends on what you want to do. If you need a transport, then the Storm Eagle is the obvious choice. Otherwise, Fire Raptor for just pure firepower.

In my own case, I have a Storm Eagle. But that's because Fulgrim needs his fancy ride.

Given how much these flyers cost (both $$$ and in points), and the fact that they *must* start the game stuck in reserves, you probably only want one.

Now, what role do you want the thing to play?

If you need a transport, or anti-tank gunship, I'd say get the Storm Eagle with TLLC's.

If you want an FMC/anti-infantry/anti-transport dedicated gunship, I'd say get the Fire Raptor.


In general I would typically recommend the Fire Raptor because it can scratch that specialist anti-FMC itch better than other platforms and still engage multiple targets, but it all depends on what you think your army really needs.

Well that is food for thought. I was actually going to use FW preheresy miniatures, raven guard minis, and for the assualt minis use the BA sanguinary winged jump packs. I wanted to cross use this in both 30K & 40k. I think with that info, that Storm Eagles have some special rule for RG in 30K & the fact I do not have any anti-tank, I think the SE might be better.

BTW, I can get either for $90 (brand new) from a guy getting out of the game...

Nah, go Fire Raptor. For 30k, while the Darkwing Pattern Storm Eagle sounds nice, Storm Eagles are generally a poor choice. If you need to drop some infantry in quick, it's much more economical buying a Dreadclaw instead and dropping them in that.
