So I've been struggling for motivation recently, and in an effort to break myself out of a slump, I've ordered one of the amazing 1/12 Bandai Boba Fett kits.

One thing I always struggle with is matching colours by eye, so I was wondering if anyone has ever done some sort of Fett (or Slave 1) modelling project and could share the correct colours for his armour etc..

I don't care so much that it is 100% movie accurate, more that it looks right.

Citadel or Vallejo are my two easiest brands to source, but can range further afield if someone does a spot on colour.

Thanks in advance!

Yes they do, but they mostly work either in rattle can colours or paint ranges I'm not familiar with or can't source easily.

To start with, Bandai's Boba Fett (like all of their models) is a fantastic kit. It's pretty annoying that the color call-outs aren't in English (the Fine Molds Star Wars kits did this though).

Boba and Slave I aren't entirely the same color, but they have a similar color palette. Sorastro's Painting recently did a video on painting the Fett figure from Imperial Assault. I don't think the colors are that accurate, but it looks pretty close. I think they're too bright for a 1/12 scale figure but they work with this 1/35 scale figure because you need to go brighter as you down in scale:

I also found this, which has the armor colors in Humbrol enamels (spoilered because it's huge):
Spoiler:

EDIT: Also, here is a scan of the color guide. Perhaps someone on Dakka that speaks Japanese can translate it for you (us really, I have this kit too):

I agree, the Imperial Assault colours aren't accurate at all. I'll give the benefit of the doubt because of display device variation etc, but I'd say they're a lot further away than I'd like, even having said I'm not worried about it being 100%.

I've spotted that Humbrol chart too, but not a conversion chart that I'm totally convinced by, sadly going into a shop and eyeballing Vallejo (my preference brand) isn't easy, otherwise I'd take the results I've found and double check them.

Fingers crossed that we can get a translation, and it's for a range that's relatively easy to come by!

I believe the color call out is in Gunze, which you should be able to match to Vallejo rather easily.

The other thing to try is looking up the color codes. I think all of the colors used on the filming armor are RLM or FS paints. The RPF probably has posts on it and The Dented Helmet definitely does.

Ran a few different terms through Google, and found this...

on The Dented Helmet.

It's Vallejo/Mr Hobby swatches, and looks like they're pretty close.

I agree, they look pretty damn close.

Gunze is one of the lines in the Vallejo Equivalent Values PDF, just remember they're equivalents and not exact matches.

it looks like you have the color palette down now...
should be an interesting project...
there is a lot of room for texture on a large scale model...
i really enjoyed painting the 72mm Knight Models Boba...
it was my first time going over 54mm on a miniature, and the surfaces are massive compared to a 28mm mini...

here is mine, to provide some inspiration...
i could have done a better job on the dings, i think, but the crosshatch texture on the cloak turned out nice, and really livens up the broad surfaces...

good luck!!!

cheers

Another option is to find a picture with the right colors, and load it into Reaper's Power Palette: http://www.reapermini.com/PowerPalette
That'll get you color equivalents in the Reaper paints.

It also depends on which version of the armor you want to paint. It changed colors between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Reaper's a ball ache to source in the UK unfortunately, unless the one decent online seller happens to have it in stock, you're waiting for them to order it, have it shipped to the UK, then process the order and send it to you, can take 3 weeks or more.

Really depends on which movie version you use as the basis.

Jedi suit was a different suit (complete rebuild and paint) to the Empire one. SW special edition was a different suit once again. All of the colours are slightly different from each other and so are some minor details.

Has to be ESB, the Jedi version looks like they've designed it just so the action figure will look more appealing to children.

Same principle, but uses a variety of paints (including Vallejo).

Yeah, the shape of the helmet of on the RotJ version looks better, but the color palette of the ESB version is easier on the eyes.

Based on the colors the Bandai version is molded in, the kit is definitely the ESB version.

Does it have a hip holster? If so it's the ESB version.
