At the moment I'm using a lamp that has a yellow bulb in, this makes it difficult to paint when it gets dark. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which lamps and bulbs I can get that will work well for when I'm painting.

Thanks

This is the best cheap combo that ive found in the UK.

If you can afford a pair of them then you're getting a great set up for under £30.

Edit: You say that you are using "A" Bulb. That's your biggest problem, try using any two light sources and shadows and eyestrain will be reduced massively.
Daylight bulbs only help with seeing the 'true colour' of the paint so if you've worked out your army scheme over the brighter summer months then you should be able to repeat ad infinitum with just a standard pair of bulbs.
Probably best just to stump up £15 or so per year on lovely daylight bulbs though.

I've had good painting experience with this lamp, as the long flexible neck allows me to position ti above/behind my hand for a clear view of the mini:

I've also used this cheaper lamp and like it:

Halogen lamp pointed at the ceiling. Thing started smoking when I took it out of storage, bumps the temperature of my hobby room up an extra ten degrees and makes it as bright as daylight with open windows and a very even spread of the light too. No deep shadows from directed light. It has permanent residence in the center of the room.

Get something with "daylight" color spectrum on the bulbs.
(they won't be as yellow).

that helps A LOT in any fixture. You can also look some "ottlight" they use full spectrum bulbs, and a very good to work by. They used to be a lot more expensive, but have come down in the past few years.

Here is one example;

best of luck!

Ottlites are awesome! seriously well worth it, plus the bulbs last quite long. I've had mine for at least three to four years and I've not needed to replace it yet. I have an older model of the above. I don't think it's available anymore which is sad, as it came with a nice caddy for stuffs and a magnifier as well.

You'll find them in sewing and crafting areas/stores as well - which is where mine came from. When I started doing miniatures again I moved it off my quilting table. It really helps.

I use 100W equivalent daylight LEDs now. The Cree ones are just awesome. In my main painting room, I run 7 of them at different angles and positions to give good lighting; two are on swing arm lamps that I can quickly zip around.

In the past, I used 4x450W CFLs - they're giant squigglies that pump out a ton of light.

Because I paint a lot, I figure 7x15W versus 4x85W will save me some money in the long run, and it's friendlier to the carbon footprint

I usually just use my regular room lighting. I paint in quite a large room that has 3 overhead tube lights and large windows to let in natural light during the day. I usually only have 2 of the overhead lights on and if I'm painting during the day a curtain open.

Every time I try and set up lamps I haven't liked the results. Ends up too much glare or the light is too directional. I'm sure I could set up something better but it'd only be like a 10% improvement over the roof lighting and not worth the space and effort.

I ninjad an ottlite from ebay for $1, it is brilliant.

I also have a big led magnifying lamp but it doesn't get as much use
