If a Commander equipped with a Coldstar Battlesuit joins a unit, how do the rules work when an enemy unit shoots at this unit. If the Commander is a FMC, it says it can be fired at with snap shots only, but how does this work if in a unit without flyers, such as a crisis suit team? Is it based on closest model type to the enemy?

Can he not be swooping and join an unit? Also, if he deep strikes in with this unit, FMC says it comes in as swooping if it deep strikes.

It's one of the problems for mixiung up ICs and FMCs.
Until someone gets an answer from GW/WD, I'd go with this:
- Gliding can join uints
- Swopping can't (the fact his wargear drones are removed from the table while he's doing that could be an indicative)

Rules-wise, Swooping FMC ICs can join units. Tyranids have been able to do this since their last codex came out.
However, by joining a unit, he becomes part of a target that is not Hard To Hit, as the unit did not Swoop that turn, just one model. Hard To Hit does not translate its benefits to the whole unit. So, if the FMC Commander joins a Fire Warrior Squad, he lacks the protection of Swooping, but retains all the danger of being Grounded if a Wound is allocated to him.
In short, protect yourself and either do not Swoop when joining a unit, or stay out of coherency and (in the fish Dory's voice) just keep Swooping, just keep Swooping, Swooping, Swooping.

It doesnt really cause a problem though - hard to hit requires you to be targeting the FMC that is Swooping; while in anothe runit yo unever target the FMC.

We don't start Resolving Shots against individual Models until Wounds are Allocated It is always the whole unit being targeted and shot at, even if that Unit consisted of a single model Game Workshop often makes this mistake however, it is now our fault for expecting them to ever get around to fixing it. They will often create Rules that directly relate to a Unit Types while still discussing something that occurs against the Unit, leaving us questioning how we proceed. It is as if Game Workshop constantly forget that Unit Types are something individual Models have, a mistake they may not be making if they had named the concept Model Types instead. Those more dedicated to research could do a search through this site and try to count the number of threads where we have to admit Rules break down once 'Mixed Units' are brought in to the situation. Do wish I had that Forgeworld Frequently Asked Question however, to put forth as some president: Forgeworld released a model with Preferred Enemy (Independent Character) that has all the same problems... your not shooting against an individual Model with the Independent Character Special Rule but the Unit as a whole. They had sided with the defender - Preferred Enemy (Independent Character) only functioned on Units consisting of a single Independent Character Model or situations involving Precision Shots which must be applied to the Independent Character Model.

It might have been overlooked but when i was reading the upgrade it it seemed to change him from being a independent character unit to just a regular character and is unable to other units completely when he takes the coldstar upgrade. I could be wrong though.

It never says his special rules change. IC is a special rule, not a unit type. He was jet pack infantry (charecter), and is now Flying monstrous creature (Character).
I seriously tire of having to explain that. Nothing personal, of course, I just hear that a lot.

Hmm, yes. Never seen our Tyranid player doing that, though.

Can join the tyrant guard but can never change outta glide mode. if swooping, has to move min 12" and as guard can only move 6" would leave the unit, and once you join guard you are not allowed to leave the unit.

You can move 12" from the back of the unit to the front. Max coherency will allow this.

Not if he is Gliding. The rest of the unit has to be able to Jump or Glide to do it.

You target units.
The FMC is the one joining the unit/ not the other way around so you fire as normal against it.

To be able to move far enough to keep up with the tyrant? Not so. 3 guard on what, 40mm bases? plus coherency, plus coherency for the tyrant.
Its possible, once...

If Tyrant's Gliding, it's moving like a Jump MC. Jump models can only Jump if all the models are Jumping, and the Tryant Guard cannot Jump. Swooping is a different story.
