I've just got my first airbrush and i'm wondering about white colors and primers. I'm thinking about buying vallejo grey primer 200ml since it works well for other colors and then spraying either GWs white scar air or a vallejo white.

Or should i get a white primer, i'm trying to not spend that much money on a primer i'm not going to use that often?

And should i be worried about cloggin up my airbrush with the white colors? From what i've read they are quite pigment heavy and i've got a 0.2mm needle (Harder & Steenbeck). Do i have to dilute them?

Or is it just better to go for an off-white spray color, wash it and then hilight it back up with a brush?

i use this primer... only around $4.. you cant beat that! It leaves a great finish, just be careful you dont spray to close.

You would definitely have to dillute the scar white by GW. Unless the GW Air is already dilluted well... not sure havent used it and i am not going to. I use Badger Minitaire and I dont have to dillute white at all.

If you are worried about clogging, buy some needle juice and paint lube. Both are not very cheap though.

If you're using an airbrush you should just base coat the model in whatever tone you want the white to be. If you want a cool white or a warm white pick the appropriate base colour whether it's a light blue, a grey or maybe a light beige or tan.

Then you can spray your highlights over it, slowly building up until your white looks how you want it. You'll probably want to finish it off with a pin wash or something at the end.

I pretty much always just prime grey and then just spray my base colour over the top. Mainly because I don't want to own a pile of different coloured primers and partly because my favourite primer at the moment only comes in grey.

I have never tried spraying GW's white nor Vallejo's non-air white. the Vallejo air white airbrushes fine.

I second that. Plus, when you cover it with white or off-white, you can actually see what you've painted.

Vallejo white primer is not nice to leave on as a finished paint, the way Vallejo black (primer) is.

Yes, it feels like a slightly tacky balloon, even when applied correctly. I like the grey far more, haven't tried the desert yet. I tend to mix my own by mixing black and grey and do a cheeky pre-shade with it if I'm in a hurry, and that looks fine uncovered.
