Hey guys,

Pretty new to Warhammer 40k, but I have a question about how chaos reward their soldiers loyalty? I've seen a lot of honour's and medals for the astrates and astra militarum.

Does anyone have a answer on this one?

Thank you for reading and answering upfront

Probably depends on the legion / faction / warband / whatever, but could be all sorts of things. Heavy weapon, ornate ancient boltgun or chainsword, terminator armour, getting to be the icon bearer, chaos mutations, getting made into a Possessed or a Chaos Spawn (Chaos is funny about what it considers a 'reward'), or even simply not being fed to whatever nasty beasty they've got hanging around... I'm reading the Word Bearers novels at the moment, and they get honoured with excerpts from the Book of Lorgar inscribed on their skin.

Basicly, Chaos doesn't fancy the symbolic rewards. They want something more substantial (power, wealth) or just glory.

You don't have to be happy when you lose, just don't make winning the condition of your happiness.

The 7E CSM codex will have that as a rule

Mostly you just get put into the meatgrinder for Khorne, or something similar. Really outdo the others, however, and you may get mutated by the gods.

Warriors of chaos seem to be more of a kind who gain their rewards by taking, not by being given them. Rewards from their "superiors" might involve letting them be the first in to the fray (whether it's to have them killed in the first wave or to really reward them). Any rewards they are "given" are likely to be mutations from their chosen gods. The boon table in the codex tries to show this, though it seems to be better at killing your dudes than helping them :p

I don't think CSM have "honours" like Astartes.
The most they get is a (hopefully useful) mutation, or promotion to a Chosen.
I think the ultimate honour for CSM is becoming a Daemon Prince or Possessed.

Actually spawnhood in some lore pieces is mentioned as an individual gaining too many mutations without ascending to daemonhood, so they are technically lots of 2nd-3rd place, but never 1st place at the eyes of the gods.

As for Honours the equivalent would be trophies which the CSM are known to sport. Having the helmet of a fallen loyalist, a fancy weapon like the one from the Night Lords novels, a BA power sword from the heresy era lacking any special rule but it is some sort of recognizance among other traitors.

CSM 10k points
IG 3k points
Orks 2k points
WoC 3.5k points
VC 2.5k points

Well, since Chaos Space Marines are like the evil opposites of Space Marines maybe instead of "honours" like Space Marines have, they get instead get "dishonours" which are the opposite of honours. And instead of being given for doing good things, they're given for doing bad things. And instead of being something you want to try to get they're something you don't want to get. So then you try to be good so you don't get a dishonour. And that's why Chaos Space Marines all try to be good... wait... now I'm confused...

There isn't a whole lot.

The chaos gods might reward you, give you iron hard skin, the ability to see sound, or an extra toe, they don't really care most of the time. Daemon hood can take thousands of years, and it can still go wrong.

As for regular marines, they might reward their favourite men with positions of power or new tech. But they would always be careful because the best way up is to kill the man above you. Some marines, like those belonging to the Word Bearers, would never kill their Dark Apostle, because they are favoured by the gods and doing so would result in a sticky demise.

Or if you do bad, they might reward you by shoving you in a chaos dreadnought. Happy times!

Most Chaos "honours" take the form of mutations, although this may vary from legion to legion or warband to warband. You may also be awarded with wargear, demonic boons, position in the legion/warband or you may just be shot out of spite.

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Chaos champions don't care for material rewards, like someone mentioned before they want more power. They are favoured by the chaos gods and will get gifts of chaos for killing in there name.

(If those gifts are beneficial is a bit luck of the draw since the chaos gods are fickle)

If you do a good job the warband leader moves your name down the list of people to kill as you are an asset.

If you do a great job the warband leader moves your name up the list of people to kill as you are competition.

Also, you are a pirate, so pretty much anything you can loot is yours (until someone else intimidates/beats you up for it).

This has been quite interesting. I appreciate everyone's feedback on the matter. It seems my suspicions were correct then, I will adjust my army in accordance when the time comes.

Thank you for everyone's feedback

Aye, half the time, doing a good job would just get you in the targets of the other Scum around you. So while you may get new slaves, totems, funcier weapons, a blessing direct from "the big guy upstairs", once you get too high, the lord will be watching his back.

But the main rewards come from the chaos gods themselves, unless you are a Nightlord or an Iron Warrior, who would not take too kindly to the spummifications of the warp.

But yeah, bad guys. Suppose traitor guard may still have medals made of eyeballs or other spheres to adorn their uniforms (or what is left of them).

As mentioned, something tangible like servants, armour, weapons, soldiers, ships, tanks, mutations, spawnhood/daemonhood etc.

I've actually not seen it mentioned here, but Marks.
