Just like the title says.
I want to add some Mech (Legio Cybernetica) allies to my Legion in 30k, but I hate the Archmagos Model. I thought itd be cool to use a thallax instead. Does that seem too far? What else would be deemed as too much proxy?

I would play against anything using the right rules and that is at least passable. Lego 40k would look awesome. I have seen pics of amazing paper 2-D armies. Some guy made a really surreal Tzeench daemon army out of clay and sculpty full of disembodied eyes and mouths that is 100% cooler than what GW releases.

The go-to maximum for proxy of a person I now refuse to play against was:
>3 identical transformers pieces proxying as three different vehicles
>The best of the three vehicles gets shot at
>Claim it was actually the worst of the three vehicles, then blame the opponent for not remembering it right
>The other two get shot
>Maintain that they are all the weakest single vehicle
>Whichever one doesn't die is the strongest vehicle
It's hard to get any worse than that sort of proxying. If your model looks the part, and can be easily identified as such, you're doing fine.

I personally couldn't care as long as it meets a few standards
1:easily distinguishable units and upgrades, I want to be able to tell who are special weapons, sergeant, wether that tanks has a plasma or a autocannon turrent.
2: It fits a theme. This is more of a personal thing, it won't stop me from playing you or even bother me enough comment but ARGH, WHY DOESNT IT FIT IN!!!
3: if its a full proxies because gw to expensive, dont like the models, whatever, atleast put some effort into it. Not everyone is a master sculptor/kitbasher/scratch builder/painter but take abit of pride in your force. It makes for so much better battles to see fully realized and distinct armies going head to head.

So, this topic has such a wide variety of different answers and factors its insane. Ultimately its all up to your opponent and as long as you arent trying to pull a fast one most people are not going to care enough to stop you or even say anything. Hell, if its modeled/painted well you may even get props just because you end up pointing it out who knows.
But, my cousin and I have been playing this game since we were 9(14 years roughly), using codex and dice and tan/green/blue/grey army men as proxies. He has this oldskool metal flyer batman vehichle id always snag and use as either an MC or a vehicle, but usually a vehicle. Transformers lego built things, I vaguely remember using a soda can once for something(i think it was a dreadnaught). lol memory lane
Now we atleast use 40k models for all our proxies and do a lot of trusting each other, so like I said, up to your opponent but, if it looks halfway passable at all, most people wont give a crap at all.

Most guys are the same if its modelled well and not to advantage and looks cool/distinguishable from other stuff its generally gonna be alright especially in a friendly game, I once used dark angel marines as proxy spawned plague bearers.

Using a Barbie doll as Wraithknight.
...well, if you think twice, it isn't that bad.
To your question, just make that Thallax different from the others. Glue in/swap some bits or just paint him differently.
If i use proxies, i write the original unit to its base. Example: I'm planning to use old Kasrkin models as Skitarii Rangers and every one of them has "Rangers" written on its base, along with a name of the specific guy.

So one Thallax painted red when the others are bronze would work?

Maybe, but your in a risky place where people may just think it's the same model from a different unit. you really should not use the same model to proxy as 2 different things or a model as proxy for another model if they are both part of the army.

Definitely, but if you want to be sure and avoid what TheAvengingKnee said, make him completely unique, not just different colour. Glue in some bits, swap weapons/head/limbs, give him a robe, swap legs for tracks, give him mechadendrites or servoarm/s... It's just up to you. Be creative, search for inspiration and express yourself...
...or/and write a unit what it represents on its base as I do, to make it foolproof.

It depends, I'm totally cool with proxy but not shady stuff. Like I've seen some amazing conversions and work done and of course those are alright, or people using different models to try stuff out before buying and that's ok. I just always want to tell what is on which model, and I personally always explain exactly what is what and who has what and how you can tell who is who to any opponent with any proxies I do no matter how minor.
One thing I cant stand is like mentioned above, someone is trying to be like no the model you shot wasn't the strong one. I know what you said at the beginning. I will openly call someone out and shame them for trying to be a petty . We are playing a game, and the only thing sadder than these autistic jerks trying to lie to win something you do for fun, is the beta personality who just set aside and let these guys push them around. Stand up for yourselves, and show them their idiocy isn't acceptable. /rant

Well there is something like:
http://hitechminiatures.com/archangels/202-28mm-choir-master-bellar.html
If I wanted to use that as a proxy for Belial most people would not have an issue with it.

I think it depends on how well the opponent knows you and your army.
I run a set of 10 simple 1980s commissars as a squad of guardsmen with lasguns, only about half have lasguns, but I figure that who the hell proxies the dullest unit in the IG for any kind of gain?
It absolutely polarises people. They either love it or insist I remove them from my list as "it's impossible to tell who the sergeant is". I made that pretty easy by rimming the base in dark red and her being the only woman on the table, but folk seem to assume I'm on some kind of tomfoolery bent when I field them.
