I am considering going to a tournament for 40 and the rules they have say:

Players are limited to either:

○ 1 Imperial Knight formation

OR

○ Spending a total of 700 points on Lords of War

I messaged the contact email and they are saying both are legal but that the formations are still bound by the 700 point cap, I can't find any knight formations that would be less than 700 points (they aren't counting the household/oathsworn detachments as formations). Closest I can figure if you went with the cheapest knights would be 975 points.

Is there some other formation that I am missing?

Off the top of my head maybe the Oathsworn detachment? I don't have the IK codex so I'm not entirely sure what's in there. But I think it's at least 1 knight.

I mentioned oathsworn in there, that is a detachment not a formation.

I worry a bit about the tournament now because if they can't even write their own rule consistently with what they say it means how many other things might be done differently from what they say on their website to how they actually play.

My bad, I had a brainfart there, thought that was a formation for some stupid reason. I'm not sure that there is. I think there's a formation in there consisting of 3 knights. But that would be pushing it in terms of the point limit I believe.

The absolute cheapest you could run a formation of knights would be 925 points

The only IK formations are ad lance and the ones in their codex

Again for what they have told me they do not consider oathsworn to be a formation....

I am confused, are the Tournament organizers trlling you that Oathsworn is not a formation?

You could use the HH Questoris Knight list. The Archmagos special character can be used as the HQ with a Knight as a Troop.

Oathsworn isn't a formation. Its a detachment (like a CAD or Allied detachment)

Oathsworn is 1-3 Knights, so the cheapst you can go is 325pts for the entire detachment.

The fact its not a imperial knight formation means you could take two of them with a single gallant knight in each and be legal by the tournaments rules

gerantius the ghost knight is probably the only one, you get a perfect 6th edition imperial knight senschal with the best relics and wargear suite for close range, and you essentially have fleet of foot like the eldar do. truth be told hes probably fast enough to keep pace with a biker army.

toss in a ravenwing attack squadron to fill the remaining 200p and youd be in buisness

DA army: 3500pts,
admech army: 600pts
ravenguard: 565 pts

Grenaticus can't be fielded in an Oathsworn detachment, because he isn't a Lord of War. He can be fielded in a Baronial Court, though, yet that's 5 Knights so well over the 700pt limit.
