So I currently have 500 points of Chaos Marines assembled:

HQ (140)
1) Chaos Lord:
- Lightning Claw, Mark of Khorne, Melta Bomb, Sigil of Corruption, Space Marine Bike

TROOPS (350)
1) 10x Chaos Marines: 2x Meltagun
- Champion: Power Fist

2) 10x Chaos Marines: 2x Flamer
- Champion: Power Sword

What would be the cheapest way to take this army to 1000 points? Currently, I'm thinking buying 2 Land Raiders (GW retail about $182 CAD). Protects me from Heldrakes, gives me ranged anti-tank, and provides a transport for zooming up field. I'm not looking for a super competitive army, just something to take to casual games.

At my disposal, I also have a Havoc Squad of five marines with 3 plasma guns and a power sword (135), and another Space Marine Squad of five marines with a melta gun and power sword (100). I could also invest in 4 Rhinos ($190 CAD) for relatively the same price as 2 Land Raiders, but then I would be lacking in ranged anti-tank.

Thoughts and comments appreciated!

Chaos knight would be a rather cheesy thing to do in a 1000 pts army lol

just buy a normal knight and take a drill to it. I was at a tournament over the weekend and can say that for every player using a chaos knight, very few were actually using the forgeworld model. while it IS really cool, a normal knight will do the job. i took a dremel to mine to give it lots of dents and painted it dark/rusty. cut all of the insignias and imperial stuff off.

your list is a little tough right now because marines aren't very effective. what you could do is split them into two minimum sized squads. get yourself 5 chaos spawn (don't buy them. convert them from just about anything. convert tactical marines into spawn, I use a box of five nurgle Blight Kings etc. whatever you want). you need an escort for your lord.

i beg of you, dont buy landraiders. as cool as they are, it's money down the drain if you want to win sometimes. in the age of grab and melta a landraider will get owned. out of 130 players at this weekend's event, i don't think I saw a single land raider in either chaos OR normal marines.

if you can find used tanks you could get 4 rhinos and 2 vindicators. split the marines into squads of 4 and put them in rhinos to drive around.

but honestly just get a knight lol. it's made life way way more fun and opened up so many options.

Five times editing and you still missed that "was a newb" is incorrect. The second person singular past tense of be is "were". I'm also 30 years old, not a fresh-faced kid. The avatar picture is not me, Sherlock.

Havocs with plasma guns are not anti-tank. A Khorne biker by himself isn't going to last long and Spawn/Bikers are too expensive. Hide him behind the Rhinos and good luck.

How to get 500 pts of CSM cheap:
- 3 rhinos
- add your other squad of SMs
- a box of Obliterators

Now the oblitz, to save moneys, you should buy terminators and green stuffz the combi bolter arm with more guns. If you are too cheap to buy terminators, then I suggest reading my guide on how to make autocannon havoc marines.

The Rhinos, be sure to keep the razorback bits so you can possibly play Gladius Formation if you decide to switch back to the Loyalist side. They have grav. If you really want to save money on rhinos, I suggest buying only the tank threads and then use plastic cards to build the chassis.

Also spawns can be made cheap. Just kit bash away on some terminator bases.

if you really want to fill points, just paint the marines green and call them Plague Marines.

5 Plague Marines, 2 meltaguns, combi melta gun and meltabomb on champ@ 155

Duplicate 5 more Plague Marines and its already another 155pts.

Add another 5 plague marine and soon you have 465 from just 15 marines. Add in the other 5 marines and you have bloated your list with some good plague marines.

Thanks for the input guys! I don't think I have the time or resources to do some heavy converting. Currently, I think this is the cheapest way I can build up this army:

- Two Rhinos
- Squad of Chaos Bikers with toys
- Winged Daemon Prince with Axe of Blind Fury

Comes in to just under $200 CAD.

bikers, daemon prince, rhinos are nice. you might like the juggerspawn route too! buy two spawn, build two with greenstuff! boom, 4 spawn retinue for your juggerlord to go upfield and kill stuff. good luck either way and have fun!

Axe of blind fury seems tempting, but you'll just die - because of the WS loss most enemies will no longer hit you on 5s, and you'll see that makes a huge difference!
Take a flying Nurgle prince with the Black Mace, he's a million times better: unkillable with 2+cover everywhere and Iron Arm/endurance, can kill hordes and MCs with Black Mace's cursed rule + Fleshbane.

Hit the swap shop or craigslist or kijiji. Used chaos is all over the place. 200 bucks of used chaos should buy you an 1850 army if you look and negotiate
