I had another interesting idea on how to track the popularity of AoS outside of league and tourney play. The discussions on this board and elsewhere have mentioned that there is possibly more interest in AoS outside of structured play areas, (FLGS and GW stores) so I went and looked at the painting sections here on DAKKA. I know for the longest time I only posted in there, with the game as a back drop when my son still lived with me. I was not playing but still modeling, so I only knew what was popular in the modeling threads.

In general paint, I had to get to page three before I found a GW fantasy thread, it was on high elves.
In project logs there was a Slaneesh Beasts of Chaos army project in the first three pages, and that was it.
I know this isn't a good indicator as to the popularity of AoS, DAKKA has always been more rules and play oriented, what about other boards though? anyone post on warseer that can report? I also know a lot of models are being shown off in the AoS friendly thread, some are quite fantastic. Are there other threads or FB groups that have a lot of AoS painting and modeling going on?

How have the models been represented in painting competitions? I've been out of the tourey scene for a while, just curious if anyone has seen an increase or decrease in WHFB models or AoS models in painting comps. (I've never played in a grand tournament, but have entered many GD comps.) I know most tourneys also have a painting comp, anyone seen anything?

I would think that if the game isn't being played but there's the same or more models being shown off, that might start to show a silent majority of people buying and painting AoS models. (and presumably playing them at home.) Even when I didn't have time to play, I still built models large and small, and took them to game stores to stick them in display cases. How are they looking?

Also in most FLGS there are people painting instead of playing, are y'all seeing a lot of AoS being painted but just not played?

How about fan art/fan fiction? (I'm not gonna go looking for that, just curious if people are making it for AoS.)

My local GW just had an armies on parade, I haven't been able to get there yet. going this weekend though, I'll take a look.

How about everyone else? has there been an upswing in GW fantasy models on display or in comps? has it stayed the same?

Sorry if that was a lot of questions, I wanted to have some open dialogue rather than a poll, which I don't think could really measure something like modelling popularity.

My P&M blog is also in the first 3 pages and MongooseMatt has a thread on the first page of general painting

I think my GW must be a black hole for painting because I mostly go up against all grey armies :-p We have more people who play Age of Sigmar than who paint/model it.

Not great for a first reply to this thread!

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

While I can't speak in general, the AoS reddit community seems to have a lot of people showing off their painted figures - many of them novice, first time painters - and Warseer (which, as a rule, treats AoS fans with extreme hostility) has a fairly popular group painting project for AoS.

When AoS was first released the Warhammer Facebook groups exploded with the controversy of course but at the same time were full to the brim with wip/finished Stormcast Eternal/Chaos and Old World miniatures on round bases. In my experience the Facebook groups are much more focussed on the painting/modelling side of the hobby as opposed to the popular forums like Dakka and Warseer. I'm a member of 3 AoS Facebook groups 3 Warhammer Fantasy groups and 1 Games Workshop fans group and they are littered with AoS talk. Just go have a look you get a different insight into the popularity of AoS.

I went through Cool Mini like a month ago looking for sigmarines and found in about 15 pages like 3 people who had painted non starter box minis, the rest were snap fits.

I also know that I have not seen a single hint of AoS from the Oz Painters Facebook group, which I believe is the largest down here, but that doesn't surprise me as that's a serious painters group, not a wargaming painting group. They mostly do busts and the like.

The Evier Metal group that sprung up after the official Eavy Metal one was shut down has had a fair few sigmarines paas through it but they seem to have been entirely the single snap fit model that people are using to follow Painting Buddha's non metallic tutorial.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I dont much know about others but AoS is keeping my modelling and painting blog very busy.

Cmon and comission painters seem to be painting sigmarites which is an indicator of growing popularity.

Remember many WFB armies are being converted to AoS with little or no painting/modelling involved ( unless you rebase) which makes the distinction between systems almost invisible hobby wise.

Oh, last month's painting contest was Sigmarine themed at my local GW. We even had free snap fits handed out.

No one entered.

But then 0-5 seems to be the average amount of entries they'll receive every month, so it is not really out of the norm.

Well that's a shame, right there, I'd enter that for the free miniature alone, paint it as a statue and use it for my Mordheim scenery xD

I don't blame people if the snap fit was a liberator - the most boring and bland mini I've seen in awhile

Lol, nothing wrong with a piece of Frostgrave terrain.

:-)

Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.

Hehe, my idea exactly.

I just need to find someone around Portugal with an extra Stormcast that is willing to donate to the Doomed city of Mordheim!

At my club I'm the only one, painting Bloodbound. There is another who is interested in Stormcasts but has so far been put off by the price.
