If its one day the store closes. If its multiple days GW will get a substitute in to take over the sotre until the manager is back.

I actually find this rather surprising. I thought the GW "company store" model had pretty much failed in the US? Haven't tehy been closing stores in the US for years now?
the_Armyman wrote:For those of you who have a LGS that you frequent, what does a new local GW mean to you?
To me, it would mean nothing as I would never go there. Previous visits to GW stores over the years have uniformly left me unimpressed if not down right annoyed. If I'm going to shop at a B&M store, I want gaming space (which new GW stores seem to lack enough of) and management that won't chase me out (which GW seems famous for). I've got a comic shop locally that has a huge gaming space with lots of tables to use. Even though their miniatures stock is nothing to brag about I'd rather go there than the best stocked GW store. Plus I play more than just GW (indeed, these days I play more "other" than GW) so I don't need a store that does not carry WMH, FOW, etc.

Pittsburgh has never had a GW store. If one were to be put in now, it would provide absolutely nothing that one of my LGS' doesn't already provide, and in fact, would have far less than what my current LGS' provide in the way of free gaming space, product, and staff. What's the possible upside?
I disagree that it would provide nothing. I, too, live in the Pittsburgh area (I'm in Monroeville) and a shop east of the city would make a huge difference. It would mean not having to drive to Oakland and pay parking; and hanging out in a super crowded space in a 2nd story shop (phantom of the attic) or having to drive to Wexford. The store we have in monroeville (mr nice guy games) is nice, and very large, but aside from board games and xwing, it's all MTG.

Forget being sick, what happens when the one employee has to have a lunch break?
(The store closes, and anyone who comes by at that time is a lost customer.)
Its really funny you say that. At my old GW, the manager put a sign on the door that said he'd be across the parking lot at Wendy's and thus, people went to Wendy's to find him

I do not like this. They are very close to my FLGSes. I am surprised they did not target Worcester and would have preferred that they did, but that would probably kill TBS in Auburn.
BUT they would be GW only, and the other stores have Star Wars, Warmachine, Board Games, Magic and other CCG, etc... so maybe I am being nervous too early.
Looks like they are pretty close to "The Whiz" too. It might be tough for both stores, especially if they don't offer significant discounts to regulars.

I'm pretty sure they had ditched GW stuff last time I was there, a few months back. Battlegrounds (formerly FTW) is still up and running as far as I know.

- Hudson / Marlborough, MA (I am guessing the Hudson/Marlboro one will be in Solomon Pond Mall) is near The Whiz in Westboro (who offer a 10% discount)
- Burlington, MA is far enough from Three Trolls In Chelmsford
- Methuen Town, MA is far enough from Amesbury
- Braintree / Weymouth, MA is next door to Battleground in Abington (never been there, but I hear its good)
- Franklin, MA would be near TJ Collectibles in Milford (who offer 20% discount)
I think there is another place in Bellingham but i have not been there
Yeah... that is not targeted at all. And not a single one INSIDE Boston either. (sarcasm)

Other than product (which can be bought online), a one man store would have terrible hours and anemic table space. I get what you're saying, but I have a buddy who lives in Murraysville, and getting to Legions takes him about 40 minutes. It's worth the drive, tho! The place has tons of gamers on Friday nights until 2 AM and lots of open tables with nice terrain.

It all just depends how large the new store is. GW seems to be aiming for areas with cheaper rent, but sometimes the floor areas are large enough to have a few tables going. My local GW actually grew in size when they left the shopping mall and went down the street a bit. Even though it dropped to only one man it actually gained gaming area.

Saw an advert on my FB feed for the store they are opening up here in Rhode Island. It's going to be in Cranston, which means it might be in one of the few nice places, more outside the high population areas, but since those places have a higher rent, I doubt it.
Most likely it will be in one of the typical places for the city, which is not really a place one would feel comfortable bringing valuables, especially at night.
And with there already being a few places nearby that 1) already have a, if small, player base; 2) selling other games; & 3) can stay afloat on MTG, I don't think this store makes18 months.

I live in Des Moines. I'm working a $9/hr job. I have little to no qualifications to manage a store on my own as of yet. I'd probably be able to get the job if I sold myself right. I also think it'd expand the market if a store were to open here. I just don't know how I'd feel about working for Games Workshop.

San Francisco had one for a while and there were at least six in the SF Bay Area, but now its down to one in out-of-the-way Union City. There are still eight in Socal and one in Sacramento for a grand total of 10 in CA. Us northern Californians tend to be troublemakers, renegades and independent thinkers that don't follow the party line, so I think GW has pretty much given up on us. :-)

Apparently, we're getting a GW store in Pooler, GA, which is a rapidly growing town just outside Savannah.
The thing that boggles me is that GW gaming has been drying up rapidly over the past five years. It's gotten so bad that my FLGS managers shrugged at the news and took the opportunity downgraded their GW retail account so that they don't have to meet minimum order requirements anymore. They also did a buyback so that they could collapse the GW shelf space for the third time this year, down to a single wall shelf and a rotary shelf for Black Library books that have never sold well.
I'm not sure what GW is thinking? That a one man store that's located in the "halfway from everywhere to anywhere else" town will somehow revitalize this downturn? I hate to break it to them, but tons of people are happy with KoW, X-Wing, Malifaux, FoW, and Bolt Action down here now. They're probably just wasting money on another US store that they'll shut down next year.

They are thinking that having a GW store in every little town in the UK and muscling FLGSs out worked really well for them in the UK market and that obviously the same tactic will work equally well in the North American market despite the two not being even remotely similar.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

I used to shop at The Whiz and shop/play at TJ's when they started up their warhams a few years back. I really like the staff at both stores, both of which had old workers from GW Natick that I went to in middle school. TJ's was awesome, I miss that place a lot for just how neckbeardy it looked, but everyone was super rad there. The Whiz was alright, I had some good experiences, I had plenty of negative ones, but never from the staff, always at the tournies, but that was years ago.
I worked at the Solomon Pond Mall after college and I can tell you that it is a pretty dead mall. I think that store is a terrible idea. The only reason I know they aren't going back to their old stopping grounds in the Natick Mall is the rent prices are out of the world there.
