G'day everyone,
I'm in the very VERY early stage of horus heresying and am just wondering how the books work. My assumption is that the new books overrule the old ones?
I still don't know what legion to start but was thinking sons of horus. I was thinking BC box and some dreadclaws however it seems they can no longer be taken for veteran squads (HH1 said they could but not Astartes...) is this correct?
Cheers everyone.

In general, Forge World adopt the style of newer books 'adding on' to old ones, rather than the GW method of replacing a book with a slightly different one a year or two later. The only time FW do new editions of a book is when the core game has changed so much that the original rules in incompatible with the current game, and that hasn't happened yet with HH. So currently all the rules in Horus Heresy books I-V are all valid, each book adds on more stuff. So Book 1 (or the Legiones Astartes book) has the list for 30k Marines and a few Legions, books 2-5 add new units, character and rules but don't override what's gone before. Book 4 adds lists for Knight Households and the Solar Auxiliua, while book 5 adds lists for the Imperial Milita and the Chaos Cults. As far as Dreadclaws go, I'm pretty sure you have to buy them as a Fast Attack choice then throw in a squad before the game, rather than taking them as Dedicated Transports for a unit. With the Orbital Assault Rite of War, anyone who can take a Rhino may take a (regular, not Dreadclaw) Drop Pod instead,

Thanks for that Paradigm,
Sorry but your answer only confused me further... The dreadclaw is listed as a dedicated transport for sons of horus for X units, however the listed units are different in astrates to HH1. Also the point cost is different...
I guess I could choose it just as a fast attack unit and deploy veterans in it?

The Anvillus Dreadclaw is a special unit option for Sons of Horus, so it has it's own rules regarding availability in that legion.
Anyway, while the various HH books do provide all the stuff for Legion armies, the two "red books" (Legion list and Istvaan Legions) actually have updated rules for several units compared to their original versions in the big HH books.

So they can be dedicated transports for the units listed in the red book but fast attack for others? Sorry just wanting the simplified answer haha.

I think that's right. In my black book the anvillus dreadclaw is right there in the fast attack slot and SOH have had it since book 1 came out ( although it was the old dreadclaw back then)

Cool, thanks for that clarification :-)
Now for some more questions,
1. How are people painting sons of horus now? I read the FW version and I'm no where near skill for mixing paints...
2. Veteran squads with MLs and sniper... Does anyone use that with frag missiles? 2 blasts with wounds of 6s being ap2 seems nasty haha...
Cheers everyone

Sniper is one of the veteran tactical squads best tricks. It makes anything with blasts or high rates of fire very nasty.
At the same time - the downside of using frag missiles is that they don't roll to hit - so you can't leverage the fact that you also get precision shot into the bargain; landing hits on an attached apothecary or similar could rapidly pay dividends.

1: The most up to date FW scheme for the sons of horus is as follows:
Green
1. Undercoat with Chaos Black Spray;
2. Basecoat with a mix of 25% Castellan Green, 25% Sotek Green, 25% Dawnstone and 25% Nurgling Green;
3. Wash with Colia Greenshade
4. Repeat stage 2 with 20% more
Dawnstone and Sotek Green
5. Repeat stage 4 with 20% more
Dawnstone and Sotek Green
6. Wash with thinned Coliela Greenshade/ Laraman Medium 50/50
7. Repeat stage 6
1. Basecoat with Runelord Brass; 2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade; 3. Highlight with Runelord Brass in
striking motions to create a chipped and weathered appearance.
Silver:
1. Basecoat with Leadbelcher;
2. Wash with Nuln Oil;
3. Highlight with Leadbelcher in striking motions to create a chipped and weathered
Gold:
1. Basecoat with Runelord Brass;
2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade;
3. Highlight with Runelord Brass in
striking motions to create a chipped and weathered appearance.
4. Highlight with Iron Breaker as stage 4.
The only update from the HH painting guide is they replaced thinned Biel Tan Green with the Coliela Greenshade-Laraman Medium mix.
2:Yes, it's good. It was even better in 6th when it was pinning too.

As I said no where near that skill level of painting... Any easier methods welcome haha.

Another question haha,
For SoH Terminators seem better with power sword/ lightning claws, how far should I take that? I currently have 1 BaC set but am planning on a second.
I'm thinking of going 2 dual LC and maybe 1 LC combi, 1 PF Flamer, and 1 ChainF combi.
Does that sound reasonable or too much/little initiative hits? I am thinking of running these with the praetor (probably with a paragon blade mod)
Feedback please everyone :-)
