Hi!
today at my gaming store i saw a bunch of people playing with epic models so asked them if they had been playing epic since it came out or had gotten in recently. they said that they were playing 40k with the epic models. i am wondering if this would work because a bunch of my good friends are playing 30k and don't really want to spend a ton of money on FW. so would using SM epic stuff work with the 40k rules system?

I don't think 30K with epic models will work. The space marines don't have the correct power armour. If you wanna play 30k without spending too much money, I reccomend buying BaC.

With the "Specialty Shop" starting up to make Epic 40k, I wouldn't be surprised to see people play 40k with epic models

They would be wrong for the Horus Heresy proper, but they are fine for the Great Scouring which is when Epic was set when the marine power armour models were created.

Going a little too far. Kinda hard to portray different marks of power armor at 6mm.......especially with 20 year old sculpts.

I think it would be pretty cool to use Epic-scale vehicles as Grot Tanks in 40k.

The only issues I'm seeing are:
Scale - For all measurements, switch to centimeters and divide by 2, so a 6" move becomes a 3 cm move, a Blast marker becomes 1.5 cm diameter, etc.
Basing - Epic Marines tend to be 5 to a base, vs normal 30k/40k, where they are 1 to a base. You'd need to either track effects to a whole squad, or have the individual models removable from the base.

I remember that someone made this system (40K at Epic scale), they also put magnets on the bases so it was portable. If you search around these forums enough you should be able to find the thread.

Makes more sense to use epic rules for 40k.
It's a more elegant rule set anyway.
40k is about as elegant a game system as a crack-ho in chaps doing the mambo.

That game was set during the Heresy - specifically, quite early on, before the traitor Chapters became too corrupted by Chaos.
I second the suggestion to just play Epic. It really does a better job of depicting warfare in the 41st millennium than 40k does, IMO.

Yep, Epic really does showcase how the 40k factions are supposed to play and it's my favourite game system. I've been on the end of (several) Epic: Armageddon Space Marine Air Assaults and they really showed how Space Marines are supposed to play. One turn, the field is empty and then, next turn, they're suddenly landing their entire army in Thunderhawks, Drop Pods and Land Craft right under your guns. Before you know, a series of firefights breakout and you've been decimated. I am really really hoping the new Specialist Design Studio keeps this ethos going. The E:A ruleset is one of the best GW have ever put out, simple to learn with a massive scope for tactical play.

Earlier editions of Epic are overcomplicated.
Epic: Armageddon was the last version, is well supported online, and is quite simply the best ruleset GW has ever put out. It's not perfect but it's an extremely fun, decently well balanced, characterful, streamlined wargame. It elegantly captures mass battles and fire and maneuver in ways 40k never has and never will.
Also epic marines work fine for Horus Heresy. The modrls are so small you cant easily make out marks of armor. But if you're going to bother buying epic models, you may as well play Epic: Armageddon anyway.

I thought you meant using large Epic models as actual 40k models. (Which I do: the Titan makes a lovely Dread.)

Just download the rules online. The fan-supported Armageddon rules are much more polished than the GW release. The Tactical Command forums are a huge resource, as well.
