So im just getting back into the hobby and i loved my old salamander army but im having trouble finding info on the old vulkan hestan model and if theres actually any rules for a salamander army where i might find them. Im asking to know which supplements i might be forced to buy, any tips on that and where to find any thousand sons info on the heretical side of things would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry typed this on my cell phone

As far as I know, the Salamanders Chapter Tactics and Vulkan are in the basic current Space Marine Codex. I don't know at the moment if they have any Forgeworld-specific special characters or rules.
For Thousand Sons, I don't know them as well, but I haven't heard of any supplements specifically for them, so the only thing is what's in the current Chaos 'Space Marine codex. Unless you want to play 30k - they have their own unique rules there.

Thats bad a$s, what is this 30k ive been hearing about, is it just the betrayal at calth set?
And i was worried the salamanders werent in the main codex because i downloaded battlescribe to see which of my old figures were still usable and could not find really any special characters come to think of it so i guess im probably just screwing up on my end somehow

Salamanders have only a single special character in the main book: Vulkan He'stan. They are still quite ripped. You wouldnt need any other books to play them but the main book and the Space Marine book.
Their Forgeworld Special Characters (Bray'arth Ashmantle, Pellas Mir'san, and Harath Shen) all have rules available for free from the Forgeworld website.

Betrayal at Calth is the first step to 30k now, but 30k has been out for years. Forge World specialty game. You don't need to worry about it if you want to play 40k. It's not 40k after all.
Salamanders currently have very little love. Forge World has a few 40k characters that are interesting, but nothing incredible that sets them apart from the rest. Nothing that makes them the competitive choice. So you can build an army out of the normal codex and only when it's done, move on to the additional Forge World stuff. You won't get put out too bad if you just do that.

Honestly, they don't need much. Their normal traits and character are great as-is. Depending on how your group rules on Shen's wording, he's either fantastic or mediocre.
I would argue that Salamanders in drop pods were and are one of the strongest armies in the game.

As a Salamanders player, I can confirm that they are alive and well. With the current drop pod meta, they're a rather competitive army, and aren't as reliant on the Gladius and its to-hit rerolls because Salamdner chapter tactics already provide an accuracy boost. He'Stan is still in, and still great, especially with combi-melta Sternguard and/or Legion of the Damned.

I haven't looked much at FW's offerings. Who is this Shen, and what about the rule wording is significant?

Run down on the FW Salamanders characters (rules for them and other Badab War characters here):
- Captain Pellas Mir'san - Captain of 2nd Co. Decent melee combatant.
- Bray'arth Ashmantle - Current occupant of the Iron Dragon Dreadnought Chassis, created by Vulkan himself and originally occupied by the Salamanders first commander, Cassian Vaughn. Immune to Melta, Rending, Armourbane...pretty much any anti-armour boosting SR. Both CCWs have Heavy Flamers that can fire as a single TL Meltagun.
- Master Hareth Shen - Master Apothecary for the Salamanders.

You're gonna need Codex: Space marines and Codex: Chaos Space Marines.
Heavily recommend starting with the first one there-TSons are pretty garbage and the CSM codex is in the next 3-ish to come out most likely.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

He's an Apothecary who can give you kill points for your own destroyed units if the mission gives VP for destroying units. Some people argue that any mission which uses Slay the Warlord or First Blood meets the criteria, while some disagree, and therein all the difference lies.

This was really helpful im really glad the salamanders are goingg strong with or without our beloved vulkan. Is his model worth getting? I saw they had a lot of primarch models up on forgeworld lately.
Sad pandas about the thousand sons, tzeentch and magnus must be playing the long game it seems
