Now that mont'ka has brought a new formation to the Guardsmen of Cadia, I decided to try my blob guard. And it did really well against some ultramarines! Our group usually builds a list before we come to play at our FLGS so there isnt much list tailoring. our meta has seen a lot of more elite units and what not coming on to the board (but not many super heavies)

Now this list wont be able to touch some of the really competitive lists that are out there, but It did really really well tonight.

I brought the new cadia detachment
HQ was a company command squad w/ creed, a MOO, a banner, and a medic.

Emperor's shield infantry company... so, 165 bodies. Anything that I could get to carry a meltagun or flamer carried a melta gun (19) or flamer (12). each platoon command squad had some flamers
1 scout sentinel - stock

then I took the emperors wrath artillery company
1 basilisk
1 basilisk
1 manticore
1 enginseer

I played against an ultramarine with (again not the most competitive thing out there, also geared for fighting elite armies)
Tiggy as the HQ
3 tac marine squads in rhinos
drop pod with ironclad
drop pod with 3 dev cents w/ grav and stormbolters
drop pod with sternguard (combi meltas)
3 autocannon dreadnoughts in a squad
2 squads of 5 bikes with meltas
dev squad with lascannons

This was a 2000 point game.

we called it on turn 3 ... he only had some tac marines and auto dreads left after the top of turn 3. There were just too many bodies for him. plus i had an outflanking on an entire infantry platoon (ty creed for getting that warlord trait)
elite infantry fell to mass lasguns/meltas
would have held on well with horde.
and good lord the artillery company getting orders now is soooo nice. ignore cover twin linked basilisks is just so rude to marines, especially the ones on bikes, and well anything else not in a 2+ armor
the ignore cover twin linked manticore is so rude to vehicles

despite the griping, I really like this formation. it was well balanced, capable of handling armor, hordes, elites, can win the war of attrition, and can ignore cover. can pepper from range and up close. the new rule for orders that comes with this detachment makes orders so much easier to hand out. that extra range on the vox was really nice too. had creed handing out orders to my infiltrators down range.

Now I am not sure I would take this to a tournament that I really wanted to win, but it is a fun army.

I tried the formations too, but they don't seem to work vs eldar and necron.

Don't you have to have a sentinel embedded in every platoon?

I'm glad that it makes regular guard infantry nice and effective. Punishing Fusillade sounds lethal on paper - everone within reach of the company commander Front Rank, Fire!, Second Rank, Fire!*simultaneously and reroll 1's to boot generates truly insane amounts of lasfire - but nice to know it actually works.....

Obviously the second rank executes the first rank, thus encouraging them to fire faster.

You made a small error there, but I've fixed it for you.

My buddy is trying to build a tank company. It will run alongside my ad mech for apocalyptic level conflict.

I'm still putting getting more guard on hold to we get a full update. Shame cause the test squad i painted up came out cool but the current codex rules are gak.

I played with the new formation where I used a similar command squad and an Emperor's Fist formation as my core. I also used the scions formation with it and had great results.

All the BS 4 Leman Russ tanks packed quite the punch in my opponents Tau army (using the Farsight Enclaves), and the scions were able to bright down several suits.

Using the Emperor's Shield is just downright nasty for most armies to compete with if they're expected to be taking on a relatively elite army. It's an army bred for fighting killbots.

Glad to hear it worked out!. I'm gonna give these formations whirl come the 12th in a apoc game my FLG is putting on, Imperials vs Orks. 8 players 5k pts each, it should be fun to see what these formations can bring all together heh. I can honestly say I look forward to the Artillery the most.

Nope, these are Cadian Tempestus. They get the Tempestus orders.

Now we argue RAW. Either I can do that or I can't issue any orders at all because orders specifically only work for Astra Militarum per the codex.

Eldar would be a good one to use it against. Make judicious use of the Psykers and Priests for those units.

No, they are not. Codex: Miltarium Tempestus is actually pretty clear about the Orders in question.

The Cadian Detachment allows you to take a Scion Platoon, referring you to Codex: Astra Militarum.

It's goofy as hell and I'm sure most people would allow you to do it, but RAW it's pretty blatant that no you cannot issue those Orders unless you've Allied in a Tempestus Detachment.

You can take a regular Infantry Platoon with no special rules as an auxiliary.

You can take a regular Infantry Platoon with no special rules as an auxiliary.

But you can't take a single Emperor's Shield Infantry Platoon as a Core choice. ESIP are Auxiliary choices as well.
Emperor's Shield Infantry Company requires 3 Scout Sentinels, minimum as you need at least 1 per Platoon.

IMHO your army lacks 2 sentinels as Kanluwen mentioned and you forgot the second company command in cimera for your arttillery company ...

This. It specifically refers you to Codex: AM on the entry listing, not Codex: MT. Therefore, I used the AM order set since that's where it's wanting you to build your Scion Platoon from. Either way, still a nasty unit.
