Hello Dakkas!
I'm going to start a new army of wh40k, which will be my first, so I decided space marines, after reading the lore, I got doubts between Grey Knights of Black Templars, I like both because of their medieval like style, so I ask some advice on your opinion for choosing the army considering

1- I'm new so the easiest to play would have a +++

2-The most competitive

3- I like close combat, so which one is more focused on this?

Is another army more focused on close combat than this ones?

Thanks for the advices

I have grey Knights and love the lore have not played them much though. they are a small model count army and with grav weapons out they can be whipped off of the table pretty quickly .

My last army was mainly melee I though it would be fun. Be careful with that 40k caters to the shooting game. A lot of times I could not get into melee.

Black Templars will give you a lot more options on what you can take. thats why I play Ultras as well. I say play both! you can ally them.

If you go for just one, I'd go for grey knights, purely because it offers pretty everything that the game has to offer, and so it will help you get to know the rules well. As grimlineman said, you can always ally in the templars later, when you are familiar with how it all works, and what your army needs.

Well, I'd go for GKs. Its a pretty good army, not over the top but you could add an IK as LoW and then you are good to go.

I love the GKs, but a new player would be better off with starting Black Templars. To be competitive, GKs are locked into the NSF formation, and their list of unit choices consists of either GK Termies or Purifiers, with obligatory twin Dreadknights, Librarian, and Draigo. At least with BTs, if you get tired of their Chapter Tactics, you can run a dozen other different chapters and/or formations for completely different play experiences. You'll also be never left wondering when/if they'll update your army, since SMs are always at the top of the list for new models and rules.

I'd probably go with Black Templars.

First, they're a little easier to play, fewer special rules than GK's, and have access to way more toys and ridiculous abilities within the greater SM codex. GK's are better equipped for close combat, but are less numerous and have more fiddly special rules, and quite frankly aren't anywhere near the SM codex in terms of competitive capability.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Black Templars are definitely far more forgiving and generally speaking have far more ways to go about close combat than Grey Knights do. Grey Knights are better if you want to emphasize psychic powers and alpha strike but most of their CC ability is centered around Nemesis Dreadknights which you can only bring so much of. Their normal guys can do alright with hammerhand and force weapons but they can't specialize nearly as well, especially with regards to survivability. Black Templars on the other hand can choose from cheaper and arguably more effective honour guard for mass power weapons and artificer armour alongside chaplains or Grimaldus for close combat re-roll buffs. Then you have the basic Crusader squad which can give you the backbone for CC assault in mass Land Raider Crusaders. For tankier choices you've always got the tried and true THSS terminators and the Chapter Master with the Shield Eternal on a bike with a Thunder Hammer or Burning Blade. Then you have the Emperor's Champion for lower points games who is dead killy but reasonably priced. Their chapter tactics even give them access to extra attacks to rage or counterattack after losing models to shooting from your opponent, so they definitely have more of a close combat zealot feel.

I'll just point out that Black Templars have the worst Chapter Tactics in the Vanilla Codex, and that much of what makes the Vanilla Codex powerful (Librarius Conclave, Librarians in general, no Crusader Squads in the Gladius detachment, and using a Chapter Tactic that isn't awful) just isn't there if you play Templars. It's completely playable and nowhere near complete rock-bottom awful, but it's not going to be anywhere near as competetive as some of the other Chapter Tactics.

Black Templars will be easiest because:

1) Crusader Squads - Lots of bodies means casualties don't hurt you as much, plus you can fully kit them out for CQC

2) Land Raider Crusaders everywhere, makes it easier (if not more expensive) to get into combat

3) No Psychic faffing about.

Like most SM from the vanilla 'dex, they're easy to play, forgiving of mistakes and have a great deal of variety so you can really make an army that's "you".

In theory you can make a really assaulty Black Templars army, eg:

HQ - Emperor's Champion

Troops - 15-strong Crusader Squads w/ LRC

Elite - Vanguard Vets, Ironclad Dreads

FA - Assault Marines, Bikes

HS - EVEN MOAR LRCS!

Sprinkle in some flamers and meltaguns to taste, season with some support (TFC/Tanks/Flier) and serve.
