Hello there,

I am newer to 40k and I am thinking of starting a chaos army. I had a few questions before I went ahead and started purchasing stuff.

1. Can your army be aligned to more then one chaos god? Like can you have different marks on different parts of your army or do you need to keep everything the same?

2. What is the Khorne Daemonkin book? Is it a codex? Can I just use that to play my army or will I need to own a regular chaos marines codex already?

Thanks guys.

1. You can mix and match at will, though no single unit can contain two different marks (this includes attached characters).

2. The KDK book is standalone and the CSM codex is not needed. It takes some CSM units, some Daemon units, and sprinkles a few special rules on top.

Currently ongoing projects:
Horus Heresy Alpha Legion
Tyranids

Thanks a lot for the quick response.

1. Thats what I was thinking, but I wanted to be sure.

2. Okay great that's what I was hoping to hear so I could just get that and jump right in. I wanted to play both daemons and marines and I figured this maybe an easier way for a newer player to get both on the field rather then ally them.

Though remember if you want to use all types of daemons or csm units, you cannot in the daemonkin book, only specific units are allowed in that book and only khorne related daemons

You can mix unmarked characters with marked units.

The KDK Books is better if you think you'd be going primarily khorne and can drop the non-khorne elements. The Blood Tithe Mechanic more than makes up for the less flexibility that you would have had and not only do you not need to take a separate detachment for your daemons but they also lose Instability and gain fearless, which is a huge boon. The main drawback to the KDK is that you have to pay for the mark costs on every unit that doesn't automatically have them and obviously lose any units that either isn't a daemon of khorne or can have the mark. However, Khorne berserkers being backed my Soul Grinders is a terrifying thought in of itself.

Thanks guys!!

And true I would only be able to use Khorne but I guess I could buy the other books later if I really wanted to take another route?

Are there any Units in that book that be use in the other books?

For example if I start with the daemonkin and then later down the line buy the other 2 chaos codex, will I have to leave some models behind?

Yeah that mechanic is what had me think "Hey maybe I should just use this book because a lot my units are going to die until I figure out what the hell it is I'm doing." lol

The KDK Books only contain the units that can either take the Mark of Khorne, already have the Mark of Khorne, or can be a Daemon of Khorne. All other units from Codex: Chaos Daemons and Codex: Chaos Space Marines are excluded. KDK is also lacking a bunch of khorne characters (really weird), namely Kharn, Skarbrand and Karnak (so you only get Skulltaker). I think it's also missing Obliterators and some random junk like that (despite Obliterators being able to take the MoK, but no one does that so that's probably why they're not there).

However, KDK does not have any new units on it's own; all of it's units are from either the CSM Codex or the Daemons Codex, so if you "upgrade" later on, you shouldn't lose any options. Just note that if you used KDK to use Daemons without getting an Allied Detachment, you will have to pay for one of those if you switch (like, if your army contained a Bloodthirster and a Soul Grinder but no Bloodletters, you'll have to get some Bloodletters to make it legal again).
