So I am looking at possibly getting the Betrayal at Calth board game to start a Heresy Era Imperial Fists army. I really like the Rite of War, the Stone Gauntlet. The Rite of War requires you to use Breacher Squads as Compulsory Troops. I am totally fine with that, but the Breacher Squad upgrades are for Mk III armor, not the Mk IV armor like what is in BaC. The Phalanx Warder upgrade set IS Mk IV armor, however. Could I use the Phalanx Warder set to make Breachers? I like the PW shields a lot better anyway and would prefer not to mix and match armor marks.

Eh. For two pounds more I can get Imperial Fists branded stuff with even more parts. Plus, that set is Mk VII armor, I don't want to mix armor marks.

Nothing wrong with using the IF stuff if that's what you want to do! It looks awesome, suits the minis, and is fluffy as hell while still looking proper. You'll also get a ton of awesome spare bits and bobs by the look of it.

I'd also suggest looking at these from Anvil Industry:
http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/The-Armoury/Close-Combat-Weapons/Riot-Shield
Won't break the bank as much, and should be easy enough to just attach to standard Bolter marines.

Personally, I think Breachers might be a good candidate for the plastic treatment further down the line. It's wishful thinking, but if they were to do a Phall set in the vein of the Calth one with, say, a couple of Breacher squads, some TH/SS or Tartaros Terminators, a Rapier Battery in place of the Dread, and a Forge-master or Siege-breaker for the HQs... I'd be all over that!

I really like Mk IV armor over Mk III. So if I can build this army primarily out of Mk IV Marines with some IF bits attached, all the better. Though I do run into a problem with differentiating the Breachers from Phalanx Warders if I do it this way. I would have to figure something out. Regardless, the PW set is pretty much exactly what I would need. Now how do I convince myself I want to get the Betrayal at Calth set (~$120 on eBay) and six sets of Phalanx Warder upgrades ($33 x 6 = $198). I would make two Breacher squads and one Phalanx Warder squad. And Alexis Polux while I am at it. Because I hate my wallet. But I like my marriage so I may have to hold off until tax season.

Differentiating is easy enough. Breachers have Bolters, the Wardens appear to have Power Weapons (specifically axes). That and a paint scheme should set them apart.

And to get the most for your money, grab some MkIV legs from ebay, and use the leftover torsos and arms to build up some more Marines.

Wardens can still use bolters, and I probably would run them with them because that is what IF do. They shoot their bolters at stuff with crazy accuracy.

Good call on the MkIV legs off eBay. Though at that point, I might as well get the arms too and build the Breachers/Wardens up altogether and build the Tactical Squads as Tactical Squads. Decisions decisions.

Phalanx warders pay for that power axe. They can all replace their boltguns for power axes which would negate one of the cool things they can do in CC: Charge them and they get Initiative+1.

The one kit I posted does include mkvii bits, but you wont even notice the arm behind the shield. You can replace the other arm with a mk4 one and the heads as well.

Phalanx warder squads offer more heads than needed too. So theres that.

I would use plasticard or whatever they call it and make the left side of their armour (pauldron, grieve, vambrace) look like it has thicker armour then say they are breachers

You dont give warders axes, then they lose I5 counter charge.

Yes you do. It's cheap access to AP2 hidden weapons. You just dont give it to all of them. It negates their specialty (counter charge as you called them)

If I am going to put some hidden AP2 weapons in there, it is probably going to be in the form of a Plasmagun. I want to keep them shooty, since that is what IF do best.

Were talking about phalanx warders here... And you will eventually get your butt assaulted. Its like yourw trying really hard to not see how a hidden power axe is good.

Rerolling to hit in challenge, that +1 initiative when assaulted, toughness 5 due to the stone guantlet formation. Were not talking about bikes here. And just curious, how do you get that T6 on bikes? Only Storm shields/boarding shields confer that bonus in the formation. not combat shields which happen to be what they can take in their wargear (when on bikes and not on terminator armour)

Pretty much. I love the BS5 Bolters. I wish 40K Imperial Fists had BS5 Bolters! Instead we have BS5- Bolters. Between their shooting and their Overwatch, and their big shields, they are harder then heck to move.

I think I read the rule wrong, oops. In that case, I would still only have one guy have an axe or throw a Solarite gauntlet Praetor/Centurian in the squad

You forgot Stubborn in cover and If you take Dorn and a Castellan fortress, you get a 2+ rerollable cover save if you go to ground

Me likey 2+ rerollable cover save! Dorn is probably next year. Corax should be soon, and then probably Alpharius, then Dorn. They need to get the HH III Primarchs all done.
