Since this forum is constantly about political chicanery, random acts of violence, traffic accidents, old dogs dying of CancerAIDS and other depressing events, I thought it might be time to have a thread where actual good news can be shared.

This, of course, will get 1/1000th of the traffic, but that's ok.

To start us off, here's a bit about Elvira Montes, an 81 year old woman who recently won the Beer Mile, a one mile race in which runners are required to drink 12 ounces of beer before each lap (there are 4 laps in total).

An 81-year-old grandmother not only became the oldest finisher at the beer mile world championships, she outran her daughter.

Beer mile runners are required to finish drinking 12-ounces of suds before each lap–four times during the mile race.

“I tried to drink the first one really fast but I couldn’t,” Montes told Runners World. “The second one went down really smooth; the third, even better. The fourth was alright.”

Montes doesn’t even like beer — she prefers scotch — but finished the mile, and her beers, in 20:24. That’s 50 seconds better than her daughter. Her son-in-law never made it over the finish line.

After the race, Montes took the family out to celebrate with chicken wings — and scotch.

We would be lucky.

That doesn't seem like very good news... I can walk a mile faster than that. Her daughter and son in law must be in really bad health.

Well, they were also stopping after each lap to drink a beer. That was 4 cans of beer that they consumed in 21 minutes.

Since she's 81, her daughter and SIL are probably both in their 60s. We aren't talking young folks here.

Like most drinking games all that walking just seems like a bit is a waste of time that prevents you from drinking more beer.

We used to call drinking before games an East European Warm Up at my club but that usually only done when you're already pissed from the night before. Can't see any need for mixing booze and exercise other than that.

The news actually brought a smile to my face today. It was nice to read that the whole world is united in contempt for Donald Trump.

Great thread, and awesome story.

I bet that 81 year-old could do the same race with scotch and not miss a beat.

This one is pretty cool. An artist updates the decor of a house in California to fit with various holidays. It's gone from a Halloween-themed "monster house" to a Christmas "gingerbread house".

From fearsome to festive, the creepy California monster mansion from Halloween has been given a holiday makeover for Christmas. It’s now a giant gingerbread house.

Artist Christine McConnell doesn’t just add lights to decorate her parents’ home at holiday time, she fully transforms it into something out of movies and fairy tales.

You may remember — or even still have nightmares about — her eight-eyed, multi-fanged creation a couple of months ago inspired by the movie “Monster House.”

Here's one i came across a few days ago: A little girl was sitting on santa's lap and not really communicating until santa found out she was deaf. So naturally, santa proceeds to speak with her in sign language. Heartwarming story.

This is not actually "good news", but it *is* hilarious. It is almost the script for an Al Pacino movie.

Drug Lords vs Islamic Extremists.

I'd watch that mini-series.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Turns out this was a hoax. No cartel on ISIS violence for now, it seems.

Today is glorious day for women's right.
Saudi Arabia for the first time has allowed women to vote.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-35075702

Since Saudi Arabia was the last country not to have voting rights for women, this means that women can now vote in every country! (at least, in those countries that have democratic elections)

In other good news, the Lake District is rebuilding following the recent record breaking rainfall (highest daily rainfall ever recorded anywhere in Britain. So, a lot) and consequent flooding. Communities continue to rally round, soon have the place right again. They breed them tough up here.

This was awful nice of the guy:

http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/football-star-pays-electric-bills-for-83-fans-as-holiday-kindness/

When you’re facing fourth down and 20 yards on the football field, it’s time to call in your punter — they make the best of a bad situation for their teams.

This one did the same for fans — paying the electric bills for 83 families.

If they weren’t fans before, they are now, after Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee laid down $18,000 so people could keep more of their own money for the holidays.

http://abc7news.com/news/14-year-old-risks-life-to-save-disabled-man-dog-in-fire/118313/#&cmp=fb-kgo-post-118313

Yeah, it's a year and a half old, but for some reason popped up on my newsfeed recently. Doesn't diminish the story in the slightest.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (KGO) -- A brave Bay Area boy is being called a hero after risking his life to pull a disabled man and his dog from a burning building. He ignored the danger and a Fairfield man is alive tonight because he did.

Latrell McCockran and his friend, Isaiah Taylor, were enjoying their first weekend of summer vacation when Isaiah's mom, Rhonda Evans, came running in.

"And I said, 'Get here, it's a fire! It's a fire! Get here now, it's a fire!" Evans said.

McCockran, a 14-year-old student at Fairfield's Golden Hills High School, grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran to the apartment of his disabled neighbor.
