Unfortunately i still have not been able to set aside some spare cash to start my space marines Army so I've been theory building a lot. Something that I've been thinking about lately is having a close quarters or heavy assault themed army. I don't know what it is but to me, space marines are all about glory and standing in a line shooting is something a guardsmen can do. Run with chainsword drawn screaming at a hive tyrant, not so much. Plus i like using things against i guess the conventional or popular way.
So a space marine force is typically seen as a shooty Army but how well would a cc force work? And would the basic sm codex work for it?

I actually prefer Carcharodon Chapter Tactics. Grav Guns do enough killing that, after you charge, you're able to easily gain the Rage bonus.
Of course I'm talking about Bikers right now.

Lots of options. Skyhammer asm, scouts, vanguards, honor guards, beatstick characters, ironclads to some extent. This is a short list of effective mellee units from the top of my head.

Space Wolves do it well.

I'll second the Space Sharks as a good Marine CC force.

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Space Wolves have a lot of fun and effective options, as do Blood Angels depending on the competitiveness of your playgroup.

Space wolves basically field units of mcs with wargear options. BA are relegated to units with the marine stat line trying to fight in assault.

Possibly field a captain with the Teeth of Terra if you want the image of a space marine with a chainsword drawn screaming at a hive tyrant?

Slippery Ultramarine Scout Biker

2 words: honor guard. They are basically mini terminators and at 25 pt/ model they get both artificer armour and a power weapon to mow down fellow marines. A +10 point upgrade grants them relic blades making them s6 ap3. The Sargent for this squad is also ws 5 3 attacks making him especially deadly in cc. The only downside to him of course is he MUST accept challenges.
